They're typical of the designs used by American railroads large and small from the 1880s to the 1970s so they fit any location and era. Plus, the complete sets come in your choice of three realistic color schemes, each featuring light colored walls and dark trim. Easy to add to any layout, they can be used as-is, or quickly and easily weathered to blend with the surrounding scenery. By the 1880s, railroads large and small were building new depots like this in smaller towns. Now you can capture the magic for your own railroad. Golden Valley Depot is patterned after similar buildings still found from coast-to-coast. Fully assembled and ready to use, it includes a nonworking semaphore-style train order signal, a brick platform in the traditional "herringbone" pattern, interior walls with molded details and a working light, "wooden" interior floor, a baggage cart and decal signs. And, it comes in the same colors as the Trackside Structures Sets and Golden Valley Freight House, so you can easily expand your station scene in seconds.

While most people were familiar with their depot, just a few feet down the track was the railroads real money-makerthe Freight House. An integral part of any engine terminal, the roundhouse is a must for steam or diesel fleet inspections and repairs. This detailed six-stall building will hold engines up to 6-3/4" long and features movable doors, simulated brick siding, smoke jacks, windows, skylights, clerestory and window "glass." To create a larger complex, several of the kits can be combined to produce a 12-, 18-, or 24-stall roundhouse. 15 x 8-3/8".

A necessity for steam-engine layouts, turntables like this can still be seen today on many roads. Ideal for use with the Union City Roadhouse, the 120' Manual Turntable measures 9" over the bridge track and 5/8" deep in the pit. Typical of structures used by railroads in both the steam and diesel eras, this trestle is perfect for main or branch-line operations. Trestles are one of the most common types of railroad bridges, used to cross rivers, gorges and other rugged terrain. This kit features parts molded in dark brown which can be arranged to build a straight or curved trestle. To protect your trestle from fire, refuge platforms and water barriers are also provided. Additional kits can be combined to build a larger structure.

The long miles can be hard on railroad cars. Rough handling can shift loads, damaging steel bodies. Wooden floors wear out and need to be replaced. Wheel flanges and brake shoes wear down. Exposure to weather and vandalism can ruin a paint job.

For generations of travelers, Union Station was the magical gateway to and from the world. Here is where the journeys of the finest trains on the line started and ended. Where travelers rushed to make their connections. And thousands of commuters began and ended their workday.

Where space was limited in larger towns and cities, two or more railroads would often combine their resources to build and operate major terminal stations. Monuments to the power and success of railroading, they also projected the spirit of the community they served and the promise of excellent service for anyone who traveled by train. Now, Walthers unveils the Union Station, a fitting tribute to the grand terminals that served railroading for over 100 years.

Designed to capture the look and feel of similar prototypes across America, it puts big detail in a small space without overwhelming your layout. All the classic design elements are here, from the tall support columns to the nonworking clock on the roof. Each wall captures the look of cut-stone construction. Separate doors and windows, large skylights, vents decals and more are all included to build a realistic model.

From suburban station to busy city terminal, the platform was the first and last stop for every passenger. Tall walkways allowed passengers fast and easy access to and from trains. The hard surface made it easy to wheel baggage and mail carts into place, as well as supplies for the diner or other cars. And since no one liked being too wet or warm, a roof provided some protection from the elements.

As an alternate to costly train sheds, American railroads tried three distinct styles of station platforms including the Busch, Umbrella and Butterfly types. Of these, the Butterfly (so named because of its up-swept, wing-shaped roof) was cheaper to build and eliminated the maintenance headaches of other designs. Providing plenty of ventilation for engine exhaust and just enough protection from the sun and rain for passengers, Butterfly platforms gained widespread popularity early in the 20th century.

Now you can build a detailed terminal scene for your passenger service with this all-new kit. Based on the almost universal Butterfly design, platforms of this type can be found at stations in big cities and outlying suburbs where they have served passengers for many years.

Parts for eight complete platforms (each 6" 15cm long) are provided, and the kit has a modular design so longer platforms can easily be built to fit your space. Optional underground "subway" stair ways, "wooden" walkway crossings between tracks, platform benches, detailed "steel" columns and platform signboards are all included.

Ideal for use with any steam-, transition- or diesel-era layout, the platforms look great alongside Union Station (933-3257, sold separately) and similar station facilities.

The Roundhouse was a hallmark of steam-era railroading, and some of these classics are still used today. No matter the weather, workers could easily inspect and service locos under cover. Size was based on the number of engines coming and going in any 24-hour period, with the busiest terminals requiring full-circle roundhouses. Our authentic North American-style model includes three stalls on 10-degree centers to make the most of your available space like the prototype. And with a modular design, you can add as many stalls as your railroad requires using the Modern Roundhouse Add-On Stalls (933-3261, sold separately). For more realism, interior and exterior brick wall details, fine windows, floor inspection pits and much more are all standard. Locos up to 125 scale feet long fit easily inside and parts for a single 145' long stall are also included.

Though engines started getting bigger early in the 20th century, no one could foresee the monsters that were in regular service by the 1940s. These locos required equally large servicing areas, so some roads simply added and extended a few roundhouse stalls to handle them. This conversion kit adds three full-length stalls to the Modern Roundhouse (933-3260, sold separately). With additional kits, you can expand the basic building to any size your railroad requires.

As larger engines entered service, many railroads found their older coaling towers couldn't handle the increased demand. By the 1920s, railroads began contracting with outside firms to build new coaling towers. Concrete was the material of choice as it was easy to use, affordable, fireproof and weatherproof.
 
Based on an Ogle design, the Modern Coaling Tower will be a focal point in any engine terminal. And towers like this were also built on the mainline to refuel engines on the road. The model features realistic "concrete" walls plus detailed chutes and mechanisms. Like the prototype, it can serve three tracks at once, making it an ideal choice for maximizing service in minimum space. The same sturdy construction that made these towers appealing to railroads also made them hard to get rid of! With its metal parts removed for scrap, the tower could still be standing in a contemporary scene, a reminder of how things used to be.

While most roads had one major backshop, making repairs at outlying terminals was soon shown to be faster and more cost-effective. As new engine terminals were built, most received a machine shop capable of handling just about any type of repair that might be needed. This all-new kit matches the design of the Modern Roundhouse (933-3260, sold separately), and can be built as an attached or freestanding building. It also includes a boiler house, which would supply steam, electricity and compressed air to the entire facility. Large roll-up doors can be built open or closed, and the baseplate has slots that accept popular rail sizes.

Railroads went to great lengths to provide important towns with a proper depot that projected a positive image of the community and their company. Larger and busier towns, or those served by more than one railroad, typically received fancier structures with more elaborate trim and attention to detail. While most were built of wood, brick was sometimes chosen for its appearance, durability and the image of strength it projected. Such was the case with the Rock Island depot at Pella, Iowa. This distinctive design featured brick construction, leaded glass door transoms and a bell roof with flowing lines that gave the structure its unique identity. Today, the structure is on the National Register of Historic Places and houses a museum.

Like the prototype, this model is a unique addition to any small town. The kit captures all the fine detail of the prototype and fits easily on any steam- or diesel-era layout.
