* Fits Steam and Diesel Era
* Brick Drying House
* Detailed "Wooden" Storage Bin
* Early & Late Style Towers Included
* Realistic Piping

Every railroad had its own ideas about sand house construction, so most were built to meet local conditions and seldom followed standard plans. Since diesels also needed sand, these structures remained in service years after the last steamer had been retired. This model fits any busy terminal and includes a unique brick drying house, a large open storage bin, and piping. Both steam- and a larger modern-era tower are included to fit your modeling era.

P/N: Wal-933-3811 Gateman's Tower

Click on picture to see larger version
* Fits Steam and Diesel Era
* Parts for Two Complete Kits
* Authentic Milwaukee Road Prototype
* Decal Signs Included

These eight-sided towers were a fixture along the Milwaukee Road, and similar designs were used by other railroads. These towers housed a gateman who manually raised and lowered crossing gates to stop traffic when a train was coming. They were elevated so the gateman could see down the tracks over traffic and other low-level obstructions. Elevated towers were usually placed at busy grade crossings where frequent train moves required additional street traffic safeguards.

P/N: Wal-933-3814Cornerstone Series(R) Modern Water Tower Kit

Click on picture to see larger version
* Perfect for Post-60s Towns
* Realistic Weld Lines
* Access Door & Overflow Pipe Details
* Decal Signs Included

Standing tall above towns and villages across the continent, these landmarks have been part of the North American landscape since the 1960s. In use, water towers like this maintain a constant pressure in the underground supply pipelines during periods of peak demand. Most towns and many large industries have at least one.

Because they're usually the first thing visitors see, most have the village or business name on the side. Some are also adorned with the state, town slogan or logo, and occasionally, a big happy face.

The kit features a body with realistic weld lines, plus a service door entrance and overflow pipe at the base. Decals for different town names and more are also included.

P/N: Wal-933-3819 Cornerstone Series(R) Gas Storage Tank

Click on picture to see larger version
* All-New Kit
* Great for City Scenes
* Classic North American Design
* Fits Steam & Diesel Era
* Build Full or Empty
* Detailed Trusses & Steelwork
For over a century, the gas works was a fixture of American cities and towns. Long before natural gas and electricity were common, these facilities generated "coal gas" (a byproduct of coke ovens) to power street lamps, home appliances and industrial machinery.

The signature structure of any gas works, these massive storage tanks dominated the city skyline. These black giants were actually the last stop at the plant, used to store and pressurize the gas before it was fed into underground pipelines to supply customers. Gas was produced at a constant rate, so during the hours when demand was lower and more storage capacity was needed, the tank expanded using telescoping sections called "lifts." To keep these aligned as they rose and fell, they rode on a series of guide rails supported by a spider web of steel trusses on the outside of the tank.

With its intricate detail and easy construction, this model marks the first time an American-prototype gas storage tank is available. A must-have for period city scenes, one or two tanks can be used where space is limited to suggest a larger plant nearby.

P/N: Wal-933-3820 Cornerstone Series(R) Kits - Through Plate-Girder Bridge
Click on picture to see larger version
Whether a small stream or a busy highway, railroads have long relied on bridges to carry the right-of-way safely across natural and man-made obstacles. One of the most common railroad bridge designs is the through plate girder. Used for many decades, this design is constructed of several steel sections riveted together to form girders. They're known as through types as the track passes between, rather than on top of the spans. Bridges of this type are typically used to cross short distances of about 30 to 100' 9.1 to 30.4m.

This model is typical of railroad bridges found all over North America from the steam era to the present day. The kit can be built either as a single- or a double-track bridge. Each includes parts for two complete spans, but the design makes it easy to combine additional kits (sold separately) to build a longer or wider bridge if needed. The plastic parts are molded in color and feature authentic rivets and other fine details. Easily installed in new or existing layouts, the kit includes complete instructions.

P/N: Wal-933-3262 Cornerstone Series(R) Modern Coaling Tower
* Authentic Concrete Design * Serves Three Tracks * Coal Delivery Shed * Loaded with Separate Details * Decal Signs Included
Download the Engine Facility Planning Article (597 K bytes, PDF format)

As larger engines entered service, many railroads found their older coaling towers couldn't handle the increased demand. By the 1920s, railroads began contracting with outside firms to build new coaling towers. Concrete was the material of choice as it was easy to use, affordable, fireproof and weatherproof.

Based on an Ogle design, the Modern Coaling Tower will be a focal point in any engine terminal. And towers like this were also built on the mainline to refuel engines on the road. The model features realistic "concrete" walls plus detailed chutes and mechanisms. Like the prototype, it can serve three tracks at once, making it an ideal choice for maximizing service in minimum space. The same sturdy construction that made these towers appealing to railroads also made them hard to get rid of! With its metal parts removed for scrap, the tower could still be standing in a contemporary scene, a reminder of how things used to be.

* American Prototype * Holds Engines up to 125 Scale Feet Long * Includes Stall for Bigger Engines up to 145 Scale Feet Long * Modular Design-Easily Expanded to a Full Circle w/#933-3261 * Compact 10° Stall Spacing * Interior & Exterior Brick Detail * Fine Window Details * Floor Inspection Pits * Decal Signs Included

The Roundhouse was a hallmark of steam-era railroading, and some of these classics are still used today. No matter the weather, workers could easily inspect and service locos under cover. Size was based on the number of engines coming and going in any 24-hour period, with the busiest terminals requiring full-circle roundhouses. Our authentic North American-style model includes three stalls on 10-degree centers to make the most of your available space like the prototype. And with a modular design, you can add as many stalls as your railroad requires using the Modern Roundhouse Add-On Stalls (933-3261, sold separately). For more realism, interior and exterior brick wall details, fine windows, floor inspection pits and much more are all standard. Locos up to 125 scale feet long fit easily inside and parts for a single 145' long stall are also included.

* Great Accessory for Modern Roundhouse #933-3260 * Build As Attached or Freestanding Building * Includes Boiler House with Stack * Doors Can Be Built Open or Closed * Baseplate Slots Accept Popular Rail Sizes

While most roads had one major backshop, making repairs at outlying terminals was soon shown to be faster and more cost-effective. This all-new kit matches the design of the Modern Roundhouse (933-3260, sold separately), and can be built as an attached or freestanding building. It also includes a boiler house, which would supply steam, electricity and compressed air to the entire facility. Large roll-up doors can be built open or closed, and the baseplate has slots that accept popular rail sizes.

P/N: 933-2601 Cornerstone Series(R) Built-ups -- Steel Water Tank

Click on picture to see larger version
Water was vital to railroad operations in the days of steam. Thousands of gallons were needed to keep the railroad running. But as locos grew bigger, older tanks were often unable to meet demand. When plate steel became cheap enough to use as a building material in the 1920s, railroads began replacing decaying wooden towers with all-steel designs. These larger capacity tanks were usually erected away from the tracks, supplying water to thirsty locos via standpipes. This allowed the most versatility, as the standpipes could be erected where they were needed most. This was a common option for engine terminals and some smaller stations, where there was simply no room for the big tanks. Many of these steel tanks lasted beyond the days of steam and still supply water to shops or other company facilities.

Perfect for serving your biggest and best steam power, this kit offers all the versatility of the prototype. It requires a small amount of layout space and comes with two standpipes (plus an oil column, which was often located by the water columns to service oil-burning locos more quickly) that you can install wherever you want.

Water Tank - Base: 2 x 2", Tank stands 4-1/8" Tall Standpipes: 7/8 x 1/2 x 2" Oil Column: 1/2 x 1/2 x 1-1/2"
