Fits Steam and Transition Era
|
Coaling
towers are an essential part of any steam-era
layout. Based on an American prototype, this
tower is typical of those found at smaller
terminals as well as stations and junctions;
similar towers were also found out on the
mainline depending on the capacity of the
road's tenders. Similar towers, constructed
of wood, could be found on most railroads
from the late 1800s well into the 1950s and
a few survive on tourist and museum lines
today.
You can create a complete steam-era servicing
facility with this kit and the Modern Roundhouse
(#933-3260), which can be expanded up to
a full-circle with additional Add-on Stalls
(#933-3261); Machine Shop (#933-3264), Sanding
Tower and Drying House (#933-3813), Cinder
Conveyor (#933-3816), assembled 130' Turntable
(#933-2613), and assembled Steel Water Tank
(#933-2601).

By the 1880s, railroads large and small were building new depots like this
in smaller towns. Now you can capture the magic for your own railroad. Golden
Valley Depot is patterned after similar buildings still found from coast-to-coast.
Fully assembled and ready to use, it includes a nonworking semaphore-style
train order signal, a brick platform in the traditional "herringbone" pattern,
interior walls with molded details and a working light, "wooden" interior
floor, a baggage cart and decal signs. And, it comes in the same colors as
the Trackside Structures Sets and Golden Valley Freight House, so you can

Plastic Kits -- Union Station

|
For generations of travelers, Union Station
was the magical gateway to and from the world. Here is
where the journeys of the finest trains on the line started
and ended. Where travelers rushed to make their connections.
And thousands of commuters began and ended their workday.
Where space was limited in larger towns and cities, two or more railroads
would often combine their resources to build and operate major terminal stations.
Monuments to the power and success of railroading, they also projected the
spirit of the community they served and the promise of excellent service
for anyone who traveled by train. Now, Walthers unveils the Union Station,
a fitting tribute to the grand terminals that served railroading for over
100 years.
Designed to capture the look and feel of similar prototypes across America,
it puts big detail in a small space without overwhelming your layout. All
the classic design elements are here, from the tall support columns to the
nonworking clock on the roof. Each wall captures the look of cut-stone construction.
Separate doors and windows, large skylights, vents decals and more are all
included to build a realistic model. |

Plastic Kits -- Butterfly-Style Station Platform Shelters pkg(8)

Click
photo to see large view
|
Each Section Measures: 6-1/8 x 1-1/4 x
1-3/8" 15.3 x 3.1 x 3.4cm
|
From suburban station to busy city terminal, the platform was the first and
last stop for every passenger. Tall walkways allowed passengers fast and
easy access to and from trains. The hard surface made it easy to wheel baggage
and mail carts into place, as well as supplies for the diner or other cars.
And since no one liked being too wet or warm, a roof provided some protection
from the elements.
As an alternate to costly train sheds, American railroads tried three distinct
styles of station platforms including the Busch, Umbrella and Butterfly types.
Of these, the Butterfly (so named because of its up-swept, wing-shaped roof)
was cheaper to build and eliminated the maintenance headaches of other designs.
Providing plenty of ventilation for engine exhaust and just enough protection
from the sun and rain for passengers, Butterfly platforms gained widespread
popularity early in the 20th century.
Now you can build a detailed terminal scene for your passenger service with
this all-new kit. Based on the almost universal Butterfly design, platforms
of this type can be found at stations in big cities and outlying suburbs
where they have served passengers for many years.
Parts for eight complete platforms (each 6" 15cm long) are provided,
and the kit has a modular design so longer platforms can easily be built
to fit your space. Optional underground "subway" stair ways, "wooden" walkway
crossings between tracks, platform benches, detailed "steel" columns
and platform signboards are all included.
Ideal for use with any steam-, transition- or diesel-era layout, the platforms
look great alongside Union Station (933-3257, sold separately) and similar
station facilities. |

The Roundhouse was a hallmark of steam-era railroading, and some of these
classics are still used today. No matter the weather, workers could easily
inspect and service locos under cover. Size was based on the number of engines
coming and going in any 24-hour period, with the busiest terminals requiring
full-circle roundhouses. Our authentic North American-style model includes
three stalls on 10-degree centers to make the most of your available space
like the prototype. And with a modular design, you can add as many stalls
as your railroad requires using the Modern Roundhouse Add-On Stalls (933-3261,
sold separately). For more realism, interior and exterior brick wall details,
fine windows, floor inspection pits and much more are all standard. Locos
up to 125 scale feet long fit easily inside and parts for a single 145' long
stall are also included. |

Though engines started getting bigger early in the 20th century, no one could foresee the monsters that were in regular service by the 1940s. These locos required equally large servicing areas, so some roads simply added and extended a few roundhouse stalls to handle them. This conversion kit adds three full-length stalls to the Modern Roundhouse (933-3260, sold separately). With additional kits, you can expand the basic building to any size your railroad requires. |

Facility Planning Article (597 K bytes, PDF format)

As larger engines entered service, many railroads found their older coaling
towers couldn't handle the increased demand. By the 1920s, railroads began
contracting with outside firms to build new coaling towers. Concrete was
the material of choice as it was easy to use, affordable, fireproof and weatherproof.
Based on an Ogle design, the Modern Coaling Tower will be a focal point in
any engine terminal. And towers like this were also built on the mainline
to refuel engines on the road. The model features realistic "concrete" walls
plus detailed chutes and mechanisms. Like the prototype, it can serve three
tracks at once, making it an ideal choice for maximizing service in minimum
space. The same sturdy construction that made these towers appealing to railroads
also made them hard to get rid of! With its metal parts removed for scrap,
the tower could still be standing in a contemporary scene, a reminder of
how things used to be. |

While most roads had one major backshop, making repairs at outlying terminals
was soon shown to be faster and more cost-effective. As new engine terminals
were built, most received a machine shop capable of handling just about any
type of repair that might be needed. This all-new kit matches the design
of the Modern Roundhouse (933-3260, sold separately), and can be built as
an attached or freestanding building. It also includes a boiler house, which
would supply steam, electricity and compressed air to the entire facility.
Large roll-up doors can be built open or closed, and the baseplate has slots
that accept popular rail sizes. |

Brick
Depot Offers N Scalers More Variety
|
The
new Cornerstone Series N Scale Santa Fe-Style Brick
Depot, Santa Fe-Style Brick Freight House and Santa
Fe-Style Brick Depot w/Freight House combination
kit bring a much-requested family of structures
to N Scale. This new model is based on depots built
systemwide on the Santa Fe circa 1908. The depot
features brick construction with a large arched
window on the operator’s bay, wood eave supports
and a tile roof. The matching freight house was
where express shipments were handled. In most cases
it was attached, and the depot kit includes an
extra end wall to allow for this. The freight house
kit can also be built as a freestanding facility.
Several depots had an expanded freight room that
can be modeled by combining several freight houses.
The combination kit includes the depot and one
freight house. While the depot is based on a common
Santa Fe depot, it’s similar to structures
used by several western railroads, so it’ll
look at home on almost any layout. |

These
eight-sided towers were a fixture along the Milwaukee
Road, and similar designs were used by other
railroads. These towers housed a gateman who
manually raised and lowered crossing gates to
stop traffic when a train was coming. They were
elevated so the gateman could see down the tracks
over traffic and other low-level obstructions.
Elevated towers were usually placed at busy grade
crossings where frequent train moves required
additional street traffic safeguards.

| Every
railroad had its own ideas about sand house
construction, so most were built to meet
local conditions and seldom followed standard
plans. Since diesels also needed sand, these
structures remained in service years after
the last steamer had been retired. This model
fits any busy terminal and includes a unique
brick drying house, a large open storage
bin, and piping. Both steam- and a larger
modern-era tower are included to fit your
modeling era. |

Standing
tall above towns and villages across the continent,
these landmarks have been part of the North American
landscape since the 1960s. In use, water towers
like this maintain a constant pressure in the
underground supply pipelines during periods of
peak demand. Most towns and many large industries
have at least one.
Because they're usually the first thing visitors see, most have
the village or business name on the side. Some are also adorned
with the state, town slogan or logo, and occasionally, a big happy
face.
The kit features a body with realistic weld lines, plus a service
door entrance and overflow pipe at the base. Decals for different
town names and more are also included.

Rock Island Prototype
|
Railroads went to great lengths
to provide important towns with a proper depot
that projected a positive image of the community
and their company. Larger and busier towns, or
those served by more than one railroad, typically
received fancier structures with more elaborate
trim and attention to detail. While most were built
of wood, brick was sometimes chosen for its appearance,
durability and the image of strength it projected.
Such was the case with the Rock Island depot at
Pella, Iowa. This distinctive design featured brick
construction, leaded glass door transoms and a
bell roof with flowing lines that gave the structure
its unique identity. Today, the structure is on
the National Register of Historic Places and houses
a museum.
Like the prototype, this model is a unique addition to any small
town. The kit captures all the fine detail of the prototype and fits
easily on any steam- or diesel-era layout.

Detailed Trusses & Steelwork
|
For
over a century, the gas works was a fixture of
American cities and towns. Long before natural
gas and electricity were common, these facilities
generated "coal gas" (a byproduct of
coke ovens) to power street lamps, home appliances
and industrial machinery.
The signature structure of any gas works, these massive storage
tanks dominated the city skyline. These black giants were actually
the last stop at the plant, used to store and pressurize the gas
before it was fed into underground pipelines to supply customers.
Gas was produced at a constant rate, so during the hours when demand
was lower and more storage capacity was needed, the tank expanded
using telescoping sections called "lifts." To keep these
aligned as they rose and fell, they rode on a series of guide rails
supported by a spider web of steel trusses on the outside of the
tank.
With its intricate detail and easy construction, this model marks
the first time an American-prototype gas storage tank is available.
A must-have for period city scenes, one or two tanks can be used
where space is limited to suggest a larger plant nearby.

#: Wal-933-3820 Cornerstone Series(R) Kits - Through Plate-Girder
Bridge
Click

|
|
Whether
a small stream or a busy highway, railroads
have long relied on bridges to carry the right-of-way
safely across natural and man-made obstacles.
One of the most common railroad bridge designs
is the through plate girder. Used for many
decades, this design is constructed of several
steel sections riveted together to form girders.
They're known as through types as the track
passes between, rather than on top of the spans.
Bridges of this type are typically used to
cross short distances of about 30 to 100' 9.1
to 30.4m.
This model is typical of railroad bridges found all over North America
from the steam era to the present day. The kit can be built either
as a single- or a double-track bridge. Each includes parts for two
complete spans, but the design makes it easy to combine additional
kits (sold separately) to build a longer or wider bridge if needed.
The plastic parts are molded in color and feature authentic rivets
and other fine details. Easily installed in new or existing layouts,
the kit includes complete instructions.

Pricing |

Stock Checks:
Inventory is a fluid commodity. It changes by the
hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure
we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each
year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order
in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm
that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order
it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson.
When we held items for customers’ orders, the order
never materialized 80%+ of the time. We lost out on
the orders placed while the item was on hold. Also
we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual
orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact
that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not
mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms
pages, we don’t do it anymore. You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items
are available and if possible attempt to locate what we
don’t have while you are on the phone. |
