Stock Checks:

Inventory is a fluid commodity.  It changes by the hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm that we have it - and - while we are waiting for the order it sells - you would be upset that we did not hold it.

We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson. When we held items for customers’ orders - the order never materialized 80%+ of the time.  We lost out on the orders placed while the item was on hold.  Also we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual orders.

Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not mean we can’t get it. So - as we spell out on our terms pages - we don’t do it anymore. You may - however - call in and we will tell you if the items are available and if possible attempt to locate what we don’t have while you are on the phone.

Please place your order using our SECURE Shopping Cart site:
http://wig-wag-trains-cart.com/home

If you MUST send an e-mail inquiry - copy & paste the entire description TEXT ONLY (NO pictures!) from the item you are ordering into your e-mail.
It will save time and reduce confusion in determining what you are inquiring about.
With the quantity of lines we carry it's not possible to memorize all of them.

Part #: BS-60262 - Jersey Central Lines - Road #'s: TBA - 2-pack - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper
Part #: BS-60263 - Jersey Central Lines - Road #'s: TBA - 3-pack - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper
Jersey Central Lines had 500 of these USRA hoppers. Obviously identified with the Garden State, CNJ also ran into Pennsylvania where the served the steel making and anthracite mining regions around Allentown, Wilkes-Barre and Scranton.
Part #: BS-60271 - Delaware Lackawanna & Western - Road #: TBA - single car - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper
Part #: BS-60272 - Delaware Lackawanna & Western - Road #'s: TBA - 2-pack - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper
Part #: BS-60273 - Delaware Lackawanna & Western - Road #'s: TBA - 3-pack - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper
Delaware Lackawanna & Western had 800 of these hoppers. Later in life, they received this paint scheme, complete with “The Road Of Anthracite” square logo. Of the four railroads to have direct routes between the New York City area and Buffalo, Lackawanna was the shortest. This was thanks to some spectacular engineering including the Tunkhannock Viaduct – still the largest reinforced concrete viaduct in the world.
Part #: BS-60281 - Detroit Toledo & Ironton - Road #: TBA - single car - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper
Part #: BS-60282 - Detroit Toledo & Ironton - Road #'s: TBA - 2-pack - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper
Detroit Toledo & Ironton owned 300 of these hoppers.  Henry Ford purchased the DT&I as part of a complicated solution to realigning a shipping channel that served Ford’s River Rouge plant.  The Ford era (during which these cars were delivered) included clean white overalls and a ban on facial hair for crews.  He electrified the line from Carolton to River Rouge, Michigan.  Ford era DT&I trains did not run on Sunday.  Ford later sold the railroad to a holding company affiliated with the PRR.
Part #: BS-60291 - Litchfield & Madison - Road #: TBA - single car - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper
Part #: BS-60292 - Litchfield & Madison - Road #'s: TBA - 2-pack - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper
Litchfield & Madison was a 44 mile railroad linking Madison, Illinois (across the Mississippi River from St. Louis) and Litchfield.  They funneled through traffic from Chicago & North Western and Illinois Central to the St. Louis area and loaded coal from large deposits along the line.  L&M had 250 of these USRA design hoppers.  They were merged into Chicago & North Western in 1958.
Part #: BS-60301 - Minneapolis & St. Louis - Road #: TBA - single car - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper
Part #: BS-60302 - Minneapolis & St. Louis - Road #'s: TBA - 2-pack - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper
Minneapolis & St. Louis bought 468 of these USRA hoppers on the used freight car market between 1941 and 1943.  This was in response to the opening of large strip mines in northwestern Illinois and southwestern Iowa a few years before.  The cars had originally belonged to Chicago By-Products Coke Company and Westmoreland Coal.  Chicago & North Western bought the M&St.L in 1960 and merged it into their system.
Part #: BS-30311 - Nickel Plate Road - Road #: TBA - single car - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper
Part #: BS-30312 - Nickel Plate Road - Road #'s: TBA - 2-pack - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper
Part #: BS-30313 - Nickel Plate Road - Road #'s: TBA - 3-pack - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper
Nickel Plate Road acquired this group of 450 USRA hoppers when they merged the Clover Leaf Route (the Toledo St. Louis & Western.)  NKP was known for being a high speed bridge line from their western gateways of Chicago, Peoria and St. Louis to their eastern connections at Buffalo.  In 1949, their coal traffic expanded massively when they leased the Wheeling & Lake Erie which served large coal deposits in southeastern Ohio.
Part #: BS-30321 - Peabody Short Line - Road #: TBA - single car - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper
Part #: BS-30322 - Peabody Short Line - Road #'s: TBA - 2-pack - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper
Part #: BS-30323 - Peabody Short Line - Road #'s: TBA - 3-pack - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper
Peabody Short Line was launched in 1956 when the Peabody Coal Company purchased the St. Louis & Belleville Electric Railway, a common carrier that linked Peabody’s River King Mine in Freeburg with East St. Louis.  The jaunty yellow and green paint followed soon after.  While the PSL would ultimately be sold to Illinois Central, Peabody would go on to run 10 more railroads scattered from Kansas City in the west to central Kentucky before the last one was sold in 1993.
Part #: BS-30331 - Tennessee Central - Road #: TBA - single car - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper
Part #: BS-30332 - Tennessee Central - Road #'s: TBA - 2-pack - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper
The Tennessee Central linked the city of Nashville with the Illinois Central to the northwest and with the Southern Railway to the east, breaking the stranglehold of the L&N and the NC&St.L (which was controlled by L&N) had on rail service to the city.  The TC mainline was strewn with 3% grades, big bridges and tight curves.  Coal made up a large portion of their originated traffic. In 1968, the TC was divided up between IC, L&N and Southern.
Part #: BS-30341 - Western Railway of Alabama - Road #: TBA - single car - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper
Part #: BS-30342 - Western Railway of Alabama - Road #'s: TBA - 2-pack - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper
The Western Railway of Alabama was a pocket size Class 1 railroad linking Selma and Montgomery, Alabama with West Point just over the Georgia border where they connected with their sister road Atlanta & West Point.  The two roads together were referred to as "The West Point Route" and were closely affiliated with the Georgia Railroad.  All three were controlled jointly by L&N and Atlantic Coast Line.

Part #: BS-30351 - Data Only - Road #: n/a - single car - USRA 30’6” 2-Bay Hopper

Baggage-Horse cars were used to transport the finest racing and show horses nationwide. Wheels of Time Baggage-Horse cars are based on the design from the St. Louis Car Co. built in 1937.

In service, these cars were interchanged with other railroads to provide seamless transportation from one race event to the next - destinations such as: Santa Anita, Belmont, Churchill Downs, Del Mar, Arlington Park, Bay Meadows.

Operation-wise, Baggage-Horse cars often ran in premier train service or specials to expedite their delivery of the horses. The horse trainer typically rode with the horses, while the owner rode in luxury a few cars back in the people part of the train. Typically, these cars were coupled at the front of the train closest to the locomotive. This allowed a smoother ride - less slack action - and the ease for the engineer to switch out the cars at the race track or fair grounds without any delays.

Baggage-Horse cars could accommodate up to 24 horses but typically carried 12 to 16 per car. The "A" end has a full end door for loading automobiles. Many horse trainers use this end of the car to ship their automobile and equipment for their racing or polo horses. A trainer and owner typically will have one car dedicated to their horses. In the original horse carrying configuration, they carried a 380 gallon air pressure water system (A.P.W.S.) tank and had the standard UC brake gear. Later, S.P. rebuilt a number of these cars into other configurations including Baggage-Express service. They had upgraded brake systems D-22-P brakes for operations with lightweight streamlined equipment. Wheels of Time models will have these detailed differences.

S.P. originally purchased 20 cars from the St. Louis Car Co. and were the last new heavyweight cars. Unlike all other purposefully build cars for S.P., these cars utilized conventional heavyweight construction style including fishbelly underframes as oppose to the Common Standard design. They were classified by S.P. as 80-BH-1.
Part #: WoT-1001 - Southern Pacific, dark olive, wood doors - Road #: 7230 - Heavyweight St. Louis (built 1937) Car 80-ft Baggage-Horse Car, Class 80-BH-1 (Standard UC Brakes)

These S.P. cars were repainted in two-tone gray as then the new standard passenger paint scheme. These two-tone gray cars were routinely in the Lark trains between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Part #: WoT-1003 - Southern Pacific, two-tone gray, wood doors - Road #: 7231 - Heavyweight St. Louis (built 1937) Car 80-ft Baggage-Horse Car, Class 80-BH-1 (Standard UC Brakes)

S.P. 7233 repainted sometime in 1965 and remained in service carrying horses and large zoo animals such as elephants until about March 1971.
Part #: WoT-1005 - Southern Pacific, solid gray, modernized doors - Road #: 7233 - Heavyweight St. Louis (built 1937) Car 80-ft Baggage-Horse Car, Class 80-BH-1 (Standard UC Brakes)
Part #: WoT-1006 - Unlettered, dark olive, wood doors - Heavyweight St. Louis (built 1937) Car 80-ft Baggage-Horse Car, Class 80-BH-1 (Standard UC Brakes)
S.P. rebuilt their Baggage-Horse cars for Baggage-Express service and were retired in 1970. These cars have upgraded braking system which the Wheels of Time models will have. The two-tone gray paint scheme lasted until the cars were retired in the 1970. Cars were used in S.P. premier train service as well as trains like the Coast Mail. Car 6503 was regularly assigned to the Starlight and later reassigned to the Lark in storage mail service. These cars were classified by S.P. as 80-B.

These S.P. cars were assigned to the San Joaquin Daylight trains. They had upgraded braking system to be more compatible with S.P. Daylight equipment. The Wheels of Time models will reflect this braking system. They were retired in 1970.
Part #: WoT-1009 - Southern Pacific, San Joaquin Daylight, multiple pane doors - Road #: 6506 - Heavyweight St. Louis Car 80-ft Rebuilt Baggage-Express Car, Class 80-B; (High Speed Control Brakes D-22 HSCE for these cars only.)

These Wheels of Time cars represents Chesapeake & Ohio's last group of horse express cars. They were converted from all-steel parlor cars originally built in 1912 and 1914 by Pullman Co. The C&O's Huntington Shops did the conversions in 1941 and 1942. Originally numbered 210-215 and cost of conversation was a mere $81,767 per car.
They can accommodate up to 24 horses. These cars were heated and insulated to keep the horses warm and owners happy. They were painted in the C&O tri-color "For Progress" paint scheme sometime in 1950s. In later years, these horse express cars no longer carried horses but were used in express services. The express agents favored these cars due to the efficiency of off-loading express shipments with three large doors per side which allowed packages to be quickly arranged for drop off.

The Santa Fe Railway converted a series of steel chair cars and coaches to Horse Express Cars in 1951 and in 1953. These "Fine Cars for Fine Horses" as stated in one railway ad - carried 24 horses. On the Santa Fe they were used to transport thoroughbreds from Del Mar and Santa Anita Race Tracks. They left the roster in 1971-72. Wheels of Time cars share a close resemblance to the Santa Fe cars.

Part #: BS-60171 - Akron Canton & Youngstown - Road #: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper single car
Part #: BS-60172 - Akron Canton & Youngstown - Road #'s: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper 2-pack
Akron Canton & Youngstown picked up 200 of these cars that had just been refurbished by Greenville Steel Car in 1953.  Another 100 were purchased secondhand from L&N.  AC&Y ran from the greater Akron, Ohio area 171 miles west to connections at Delphos.  They were a small railroad but vital, particularly to the area’s tire and rubber industry.  N&W purchased the AC&Y in 1964 but the company remained separate until finally merged in 1982.
Part #: BS-60181 - Buffalo & Susquehanna - Road #: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper single car
Part #: BS-60182 - Buffalo & Susquehanna - Road #'s: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper 2-pack
Buffalo & Susquehanna took delivery of about 600 of these hoppers in two batches.  The B&S was born in 1893 when Frank and Charles Goodyear consolidated their railroad properties in New York and Pennsylvania.  The brothers had considerable timber interests in the area and needed the B&S to serve them.  By 1905, B&S ran from Addison and Wellsville, New York southwest to Sagamore (not too far from Pittsburgh) a total of 254 miles.  By this time, coal had become the chief commodity on the southern half of the railroad.  The following year, B&S built a 90 mile extension to their Wellsville line going all the way to Buffalo.  The Buffalo line was abandoned after just 10 disappointing years.  Baltimore & Ohio purchased the B&S in 1932 and the Buffalo & Susquehanna’s sizeable hopper fleet went to work side by side with their new owners'.
Part #: BS-60191 - Charleston & Western Carolina - Road #: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper single car
Part #: BS-60192 - Charleston & Western Carolina - Road #'s: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper 2-pack
Charleston & Western Carolina had at least 360 of these hoppers which appeared to have mostly been used to haul stone. C&WC was born from an 1896 merger creating a 341 mile route from the Atlantic port of Port Royal, South Carolina (between Savannah and Charleston) to cities in the northwest corner of the state. The line ran along the Georgia border, crossing it to reach Augusta, then back into South Carolina to fan out and reach Anderson, Greenville and Spartanburg. Their connection in Spartanburg with sister road Clinchfield and Clinchfield’s connection with C&O created an important through route from the Industrial Midwest (particularly Ohio, Indiana and Michigan) to the ports of South Carolina. Atlantic Coast Line held stock control of the C&WC since 1897 but it remained a separate operation until it was finally absorbed by ACL in 1959. We will be including “stone” loads on this run in place of the usual “coal” loads.
Part #: BS-60201 - Chicago & Eastern Illinois - Road #: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper single car
Part #: BS-60202 - Chicago & Eastern Illinois - Road #'s: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper 2-pack
Part #: BS-60203 - Chicago & Eastern Illinois - Road #'s: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper 3-pack
Chicago & Eastern Illinois picked up 260 of these hoppers from a used (freight) car dealer in 1940. The new additions received this paint scheme including the distinctive “For DEPENDABLE HEAT AND POWER, ILLINOIS AND INDIANA COAL” logo to the left of the reporting marks. C&EI ran south from Chicago before separating into three distinct routes. The eastern line ran to Evansville where they interchanged with L&N for points in the Deep South. The middle line served the extensive coal fields of Southern Illinois before crossing the massive Thebes Bridge to reach Cotton Belt, Frisco and MoPac connections in Chaffee, Missouri. The third line ran to St. Louis, partially on a line shared with Big Four.
Part #: BS-60211 - Lehigh Valley - Road #: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper single car
Part #: BS-60212 - Lehigh Valley - Road #'s: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper 2-pack
Part #: BS-60213 - Lehigh Valley - Road #'s: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper 3-pack
Lehigh Valley received 940 of these hoppers from Bethlehem Steel just seven months after America’s entry into the Second World War. Anthracite traffic was still relatively strong during this period and LV was pressed to feed the wartime demands for raw material by the steel mills of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Despite their diminutive size, these hoppers earned their keep and more than a dozen were still in service on the first day of Conrail, 34 years after they were first delivered.
Part #: BS-60221 - Northern Pacific - Road #: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper single car
Part #: BS-60222 - Northern Pacific - Road #'s: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper 2-pack
Part #: BS-60223 - Northern Pacific - Road #'s: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper 3-pack
Northern Pacific bought a modest fleet of these hoppers on the used freight car market. Mines along the NP in Montana and the Dakotas produced lignite, also known as sub-bituminous or brown coal. Much of the NP steam locomotive fleet was designed to handle this grade of coal. For reasons lost to the years, these cars appeared to have received their “NORTHERN PACIFIC” lettering using stencils meant for NP’s flat cars rather than those usually used on hoppers and gondolas. About half of NP’s USRA 2-bay hopper fleet was still in operation in the 1960s.
Part #: BS-60231 - Pere Marquette - Road #: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper single car
Part #: BS-60232 - Pere Marquette - Road #'s: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper 2-pack
Pere Marquette had 1,500 of these hoppers. The 2,200 mile PM blanketed Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, connecting it with Chicago, Toledo, and cutting across Ontario to reach Buffalo, New York. They found themselves in a fine position to serve the growing automobile industry. Control of the PM was acquired by the Van Sweringen brothers who also controlled C&O, Nickel Plate, Erie and Wheeling & Lake Erie. In 1947, the PM became the Pere Marquette District of the Chesapeake & Ohio. The two connected only in Toledo and Chicago and since steam was still king, locomotives tended to stay close to home. As a result, there was little outward evidence of the merger for many years to come.
Part #: BS-60241 - Seaboard Air Line - Road #: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper single car
Part #: BS-60242 - Seaboard Air Line - Road #'s: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper 2-pack
Part #: BS-60243 - Seaboard Air Line - Road #'s: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper 3-pack
Seaboard Air Line had about 700 USRA and similar design 2-bay hoppers in their extensive fleet. The term “Air Line” meant a straight, fast route and its use pre-dates the invention of mechanical flight. The SAL system ran from Virginia south to the tip of Florida and west into Alabama. Following the Second World War, SAL began gaining strength and traffic increased. In fact, SAL was one of the few railroads to have more freight cars in the 1960s than they did in the 1920s – a testament to the growing economy of the region it served. SAL merged with rival Atlantic Coast Line in 1967, creating Seaboard Coast Line.
Part #: BS-60251 - Virginian - Road #: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper single car
Part #: BS-60252 - Virginian - Road #'s: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper 2-pack
Part #: BS-60253 - Virginian - Road #'s: TBA - USRA 2-Bay Hopper 3-pack
Virginian Railway had about 330 of these hoppers split between two groups. Virginian was built to move West Virginia coal to the docks at Norfolk but in 1925, they bridged the Kanawha River and connected with the New York Central System. This allowed the Virginian hopper fleet to spill out across the Industrial Midwest, fueling industries large and small. Virginian hoppers were such a common sight that they became a staple in trainsets for decades to come. Virginian merged into Norfolk & Western in 1959.

They were repainted in the Two-Tone Gray giving it an updated modern look. They matched Pullman Co. two-tone gray streamlined Pullman cars in pool service and the early CNW-UP-SP joint train "The 49ers".

The lines east of El Paso on the S.P. were operated under the Texas & New Orleans (T&NO) banner. Due to the requirements of Texas at one time, railroads operating in their state were required to have a separate operating company - reason for T&NO existence until 1961. "Lines" on the letter board were added sometime in the '20's and on some cars lasted into the 50's.

Additionally with the murder of his 1st cousin in Denver and the pending funeral life has intruded on the normal routine.

November 1 - Pontification Time: While I hunkered down here in Mogote bivouacked near the RR working on the Rapido announcement (that I hope will be complete in an hour) I was listening to Sirius XM 70's on 7 for Casey Kasem's American Top 40.  As he counted down to Gladys Knight & the Pips Midnight Train to Georgia (their first #1 on 10/27/73) I was once again reminded of Sunday nights spent doing homework and counting down with Kasey.  Then I was troubled by all the consternation the Casem family has gone through since his passing.  I sit here in the cold of the San Luis Valley and pray that they can once and finally find the peace and tranquility that Kasey brought so many of my generation especially as he concluded each week with this phrase: "Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the Stars."  Now that AT40 has concluded for this week I will put in the Garth Brooks DVD from Wynn Las Vegas - the "Blame it all on My Roots" Concert.   What better day can one have?

A Note on Stock Status:
Not all items can be in stock at all times. Due to minimum order requirements from manufacturers and distributors and shipping charges - we "bunch" up re-orders to save you money. Sometimes it takes longer - but we can continue to offer the item at a substantial discount that way.

Confused about Reservations?
Please consider that this is the way we pay the bills and put food on the table. Taking pre-orders allows us to order enough to cover known demand. We attempt to gauge (ok - guess) how many will be ordered after the order deadline plus allow us to have the item in stock for 45-60 days after shipment by the manufacturer.
Sometimes we get it right and sometimes we don't. Occasionally - when an item is not likely to be produced again (D&RGW H-15-44s for example) we order beyond our guess to have a few for longer than that.
