P/N: Wal-933-3213 Central Gas & Supply Limited-Rerun Cornerstone Series® Kit
  • 2 Detailed Propane Tanks
  • Modern "Metal" Office
  • Pumphouse & Piping
  • Smaller Tanks & Bottles
  • Colorful Decals
  • Great Add-on for Modern Grain Facility & Industries

Propane distribution facilities are common throughout the country, receiving bulk shipments by rail and truck. The gas is easily converted into a liquid, which is then stored in insulated, cylindrical tanks. Commonly used for home and industrial heating, propane is also widely used as fuel for taxis, trucks, and buses.

This kit is similar to dealerships from coast to coast, and similar storage and handling facilities can be found alongside railroad shops, grain elevators (elevators may also have nearly identical tanks for anhydrous ammonia storage, which can easily be modeled by shortening the two vent pipes) and many types of industries.

The kit includes the office, two storage tanks, pump houses, and smaller bottles and tanks typical of those used at rural homes.
  • PLEASE NOTE: Production of this kit will be limited to the actual number ordered by October 14, 2007! Don't be disappointed - reserve yours today!

P/N: Wal-933-3818 Pella Depot Cornerstone Series® Kit
  • Unique Brick Design
  • Stained Glass Transom Decals
  • Authentic Design & Detail
  • Rock Island Prototype

Railroads went to great lengths to provide important towns with a proper depot that projected a positive image of the community and their company. Larger and busier towns, or those served by more than one railroad, typically received fancier structures with more elaborate trim and attention to detail. While most were built of wood, brick was sometimes chosen for its appearance, durability and the image of strength it projected. Such was the case with the Rock Island depot at Pella, Iowa. This distinctive design featured brick construction, leaded glass door transoms and a bell roof with flowing lines that gave the structure its unique identity. Today, the structure is on the National Register of Historic Places and houses a museum.

Like the prototype, this model is a unique addition to any small town. The kit captures all the fine detail of the prototype and fits easily on any steam- or diesel-era layout.

PLEASE NOTE: Production of this kit will be limited to the actual number ordered by June 30, 2007! Don't be disappointed - reserve yours today!
From the Pacific Northwest, from Canada, from the southern states, colorful freight cars arrive daily with loads of lumber. The fragrant smell of fresh-cut wood is everywhere as crews begin unloading. At the office, contractors and builders take delivery of lumber and other materials. Trucks groan out on to the street, working through the gears as they move loads to area building projects.

As the local lumber yard evolved into a building materials center, the operation grew larger in scope and size. Lumber is only part of the business these days. Most carry anything and everything, from insulating materials to plumbing fixtures to electrical supplies. Some also fabricate major components, such as roof trusses, decks and other structural sub-assemblies. And the business still depends on the local railroad to bring in the raw materials in bulk.

With Mills Bros. Lumber, building more action into your operations is a snap! The kit includes six separate structures; a large shed with dock, two open sheds with positionable doors, an outdoor canopy and a corrugated office building. You can arrange them to fit your layout space and create a perfect business for any trackside town. All parts are molded in realistic colors and complete instructions make construction fast and fun. Plus, colorful sign decals are included for the finishing touch. .

P/N: 933-2607 Cornerstone Series(R) Built-Ups -- Golden Valley Depot - Yellow Ochre & Oxide Brown
Used as a group or by themselves, these buildings say railroad in any layout, module or diorama scene. They're typical of the designs used by American railroads large and small from the 1880s to the 1970s so they fit any location and era. Plus, the complete sets come in your choice of three realistic color schemes, each featuring light colored walls and dark trim. Easy to add to any layout, they can be used as-is, or quickly and easily weathered to blend with the surrounding scenery. Each set is complete with an Interlocking Tower, Speeder Shed with Unpowered Speeder Replica and Crossing Shanty with Two Positionable Crossing Gates.

Golden Valley Depot is patterned after similar buildings still found from coast-to-coast. Fully assembled and ready to use, it includes a nonworking semaphore-style train order signal, a brick platform in the traditional "herringbone" pattern, interior walls with molded details and a working light, "wooden" interior floor, a baggage cart and decal signs. And, it comes in the same colors as the Trackside Structures Sets and Golden Valley Freight House, so you can easily expand your station scene in seconds.

P/N: 933-3237 Cornerstone Series(R) Superior Paper Company
Click on picture to see larger version
Paper mills are some of the busiest spots along the railroads that serve them. Tons of raw materials arrive in specialized cars including woodchip gons and pulpwood flats, along with a variety of chemicals and slurries that are shipped in tank cars. Finished products are also shipped by rail, typically in special service box cars.

The Superior Paper kit comes with two complete buildings to begin operations, which could also be used to model a variety of other industries. The first step in paper-making is the kraft (German for strength) mill, where wood is transformed into pulp. This modern steel structure is complete with large smokestacks and a variety of other details. (Used by itself, this building makes a great modern powerhouse for an electric utility or major industry.) Pulp is processed in the Main Building, a large brick structure that's complete with pulp vats, loading docks, separate windows and many other details. Detailed instructions are provided for the entire complex, along with colorful sign decals.

Sized right to look right on any railroad, this modern industry is perfect for use with the 60' Pulpwood Cars 3-Packs (932-39801 Series) or single cars, (933-8900 Series). All cars come fully assembled and ready for service on your railroad.

P/N: 933-3241 Cornerstone Series® Glacier Gravel

Click on picture to see larger version
The smooth operation of your railroad all rests on ballast. Without ballast your railroad is mud! Railroads have an enormous appetite for crushed rock. A mile of mainline can gobble up thousands of tons. Glacier Gravel Co. will help satisfy your railroads appetite for rock.

Glaciers hefty rock crusher is typical of those found at quarries across the continent. Here, hard rock is crushed into 3" to 6" chunks and loaded into ballast hoppers for a trip to the dumping site. These hoppers are equipped with special longitudinal doors that allow the ballast to be dumped on both sides of the rail.

Glacier Gravel Co. features corrugated construction on a heavy poured concrete foundation/loading tunnel. Conveyors to a truck dump and feeder from the quarry complete the facility. Rock crushers similar to this have been in use since the 1940s, so Glacier Gravel Co. will fit perfectly into transition and modern era layouts.

P/N: 933-3243 Cornerstone Series(R) Al's Victory Service

Click on picture to see larger version
Not too long ago, stations like Al's could be found at every busy city intersection and along most major highways. Premium was 25 cents a gallon, maps were free, restrooms were clean. There was a mechanic on duty who could fix anything. And Al always wore a spotless uniform when he came out to pump your gas, check the oil and wash the windows.

Introduced in the late 1930s, box style stations like this sprang up from coast to coast and remained a standard well into the 1950s. Combining the office, restrooms and service bays into one structure, they provided a uniform, neat appearance that attracted motorists. Lots of windows made them bright and cheerful, as did the enameled steel walls decorated in company colors. Although newer stations have taken their place, many survive today as independent garages, body shops, retail stores and offices. A few have even been converted into private homes!

P/N: 933-3245 Cornerstone Series(R) Ice House & Icing Platform Not currently in stock at Walthers, Expected: Unknown.
Click on picture to see larger version
From the 1880s to the 1970s, ice-cooled reefers were a fixture of railroading. Solid trains raced across country with their perishable loads. Supplying ice for the cars in transit was a huge industry. Railroads built ice houses and platforms, like this kit, about every 250-300 miles. Here, entire trains could be serviced and on the move in minutes.

This complete kit includes a detailed Ice House, based on a prototype in Antigo, Wisconsin, plus a modular Icing Platform, from a Pacific Fruit Express design. Lots of add-on details, including an optional platform roof (used in warm areas to shade ice and slow melting), roof vents and ice blocks are included.

Coal Bunkers: 5-3/8 x 2-1/8 x 4-7/16" 13.5 x 5.3 x 11.2cm Office/Scalehouse: 2-7/8 x 1-3/4 x 1-3/4" 7.3 x 4.4 x 4.4cm Oil Tanks 13/16" 2cm Diameter x 2-3/16" 5.5cm Tall Pump House: 3/4 x 1 x 13/16" 1.9 x 1.5 x 2.1cm

Shoehorned alongside mainlines and sidings, the local fuel dealer was well known to everyone in town. Coal for home heating, as well as commercial accounts like small factories and stores, could by bought by the bag-full or the ton and delivered to your house. As oil furnaces became common, many dealers expanded their line to include home heating oil too.

Whether in a big city scene or a quiet country town, this kit looks great next to the tracks of your N Scale railroad. The kit is complete with detailed "concrete" storage silos, a small office with attached scale platform area, oil tank and other details to build a complete scene. And like the prototypes, the buildings are easily arranged to fit in odd-shaped spaces.

Typical of facilities commonly seen in the US from the 1920s to the 1960s, it can be built as a free-standing business. Many fuel dealerships were often operated by the local lumber yard or grain elevator, opening additional industrial ideas for using other Walthers kits and accessories.

P/N: 933-3247 Cornerstone Series (R) Western Flood Loader -- 19 x 2-11/16 x 9-5/8" 48.3 x 6.8 x 24.4cm - Conveyor Sections 4-1/4" 10.8cm

Click on picture to see larger version
Put big action in a small space with this exciting new industry on your railroad. With today's "just in time" coal delivery, meeting customer schedules demands equipment that's up to the job. Now in use in both eastern and western coal fields, these big buildings are essentially storage silos that hold tons of coal for reloading unit trains. Since the actual mine and processing operations are often miles away, this building and conveyor can be placed trackside, to imply the presence of a bigger mine operation located off your layout.

The basic building includes a variety of roof-top machinery that puts realistic detail in this highly visible location. Modular conveyor sections can be arranged in a variety of ways, or combined with other buildings like the New River Mining Company, (933-3221) or Glacier Gravel (933-3241)to model a complete scene. And, the stackable silo sections allow you to easily build a tall or short structure that can fit where overhead clearance may be limited.

P/N: 933-3248 Cornerstone Series(R) Walking Beam/"Horse Head" Oil Pump -- Measures Approximately: 2-3/4 x 1 x 1-13/16" 6.8 x 2.5 x 4.5cm

Click on picture to see larger version
Finding oil is hard work - and so is getting it out of the ground. If the oil is thin enough and there's enough underground pressure, it may flow into the well on its own. This may continue for a few hours or a few years, but in time, the pressure drops. Today, nearly 95% of all US oil wells require pumps to stay in production and one of the most common is the walking beam or "horse head."

Seen alone or in groups wherever oil is found, this new kit is a great way to model a part of this vital industry anywhere on your layout. It's typical of American designs in use since the 1920s and includes a detailed stationary diesel power plant, walking beam, rear crank and counterweight, along with the odd-shaped "horse head" front counterweight that gives the machines their nickname

Designed from the ground up to be a WORKING model, the kit includes a hidden drive. Whenever you're ready, just add the Universal Gearbox and Motor Drive Kit #933-1050 sold separately, to power your pump. Complete instructions and precise engineering produce a great looking, easy to build replica.

P/N: 933-3249 Cornerstone Series (R) Blast Furnace -- Blast Furnace: 19-5/8 x 7-1/4 x 15-1/4". Highline 8-3/8 x 3-7/8"
Click on picture to see larger version
Say the word steel to even the most casual observer and they picture these towering giants. Looming hundreds of feet into the skyline, their maze of pipes and equipment stands in stark contrast to the lines of newer buildings. Running nonstop, no other part of a steel works generates as much rail traffic. Hoppers bring up load after load of iron ore or taconite, coke and limestone. Hot metal cars carry the molten steel to the converters, while slag cars take their loads to the dump.

At last, here's a model that captures the power of the prototype and still fits the average layout. This complete kit includes the furnace, stoves, dust collectors and cleaning system, piping, cast house, hearth, skip hoist, high line supports - over 300 parts in all. Yet, it's designed for easy construction and includes complete instructions. Your finished model can be used as the centerpiece of a layout serving the steel industry, or a super addition to any industrial area.

Click on picture to see larger version
Glowing with an inner fire of 2200°F, a fresh ingot thunders onto the tables and into the rollers. Inside massive mill buildings, ingots are transformed into the beams, pipes, tubes, sheets and hundreds of other steel shapes that are the raw materials of other industries. Rolling Mills are some of the biggest and most important structures in any steel works, often stretching for a half-mile or more! Similar corrugated steel structures also house continuous casters, galvanizing plants and pipe, rod or wire mills. Big and versatile, this kit can make it easy to model the facilities of a steel works on your layout and is perfect alongside the Blast Furnace (#933-3249). Its steel construction and size make it a natural for recreating other types of modern manufacturing plants too. With a modular design, plus optional cutout end doors and walls, you can easily customize the building to fit your layout. The baseplate includes simulated rails so you can roll cars inside. The big roof invites plenty of detail, so weve included both a full-length monitor-type as well as individual round vents, used on the prototypes to release the tremendous heat that builds up inside. Complete instructions are included to make construction fast and fun. And for the finishing touch, theres a realistic decal sheet complete with safety signs and more.

P/N: 933-3257 Cornerstone Series(R) Plastic Kits -- Union Station - 16 x 6 x 5-1/2" 40 x 15 x 16.2cm
Click on picture to see larger version
For generations of travelers, Union Station was the magical gateway to and from the world. Here is where the journeys of the finest trains on the line started and ended. Where travelers rushed to make their connections. And thousands of commuters began and ended their workday.

Where space was limited in larger towns and cities, two or more railroads would often combine their resources to build and operate major terminal stations. Monuments to the power and success of railroading, they also projected the spirit of the community they served and the promise of excellent service for anyone who traveled by train. Now, Walthers unveils the Union Station, a fitting tribute to the grand terminals that served railroading for over 100 years.

Designed to capture the look and feel of similar prototypes across America, it puts big detail in a small space without overwhelming your layout. All the classic design elements are here, from the tall support columns to the nonworking clock on the roof. Each wall captures the look of cut-stone construction. Separate doors and windows, large skylights, vents decals and more are all included to build a realistic model.

P/N: 933-3258 Cornerstone Series(R) Plastic Kits -- Butterfly-Style Station Platform Shelters pkg(8)
Click on picture to see larger version
Each Section Measures: 6-1/8 x 1-1/4 x 1-3/8" 15.3 x 3.1 x 3.4cm

From suburban station to busy city terminal, the platform was the first and last stop for every passenger. Tall walkways allowed passengers fast and easy access to and from trains. The hard surface made it easy to wheel baggage and mail carts into place, as well as supplies for the diner or other cars. And since no one liked being too wet or warm, a roof provided some protection from the elements.

As an alternate to costly train sheds, American railroads tried three distinct styles of station platforms including the Busch, Umbrella and Butterfly types. Of these, the Butterfly (so named because of its up-swept, wing-shaped roof) was cheaper to build and eliminated the maintenance headaches of other designs. Providing plenty of ventilation for engine exhaust and just enough protection from the sun and rain for passengers, Butterfly platforms gained widespread popularity early in the 20th century.

Now you can build a detailed terminal scene for your passenger service with this all-new kit. Based on the almost universal Butterfly design, platforms of this type can be found at stations in big cities and outlying suburbs where they have served passengers for many years.

Parts for eight complete platforms (each 6" 15cm long) are provided, and the kit has a modular design so longer platforms can easily be built to fit your space. Optional underground "subway" stair ways, "wooden" walkway crossings between tracks, platform benches, detailed "steel" columns and platform signboards are all included.

Ideal for use with any steam-, transition- or diesel-era layout, the platforms look great alongside Union Station (933-3257, sold separately) and similar station facilities.
