The History:
Ranked
as possibly one of the most exotic diesel locomotives ever, the
DL-109 was powered by two 1000 horsepower, six cylinder Model
539 diesel engines. This locomotive was introduced as Alco’s
first streamlined cab locomotive and was designed by the noted
industrial designer Otto Kuhler.
Seven American railroads received 74 cab units and 4 boosters
from 1940 to 1945. The roads included: New Haven (60 units),
Southern (3 a-units & 3 b-units), Rock Island (4 units), Gulf, Mobile &
Ohio (3 units), Milwaukee Road (2 units), Santa Fe (1a-unit & 1b-unit),
and Chicago & North Western (1 unit).
During WWII, the War Production Board placed
heavy restrictions on Alco passenger locomotive production.
However, New Haven was granted an exemption by the Board to
acquire 60 units for around the clock duty. The streamlined
DL-109 workhorses pulled passenger trains by day and freight
trains by night. By the end of WWII, Alco had retired the
DL-109 in favor of its new passenger locomotive, the PA. Setting
the standard for future locomotives, the DL-109 was a hallmark
in the production of early passenger diesels, and its unique
styling has earned it a place in the hearts of many railfans.
The Model:
- Factory Installed 8-Pin DCC Plug
- Heavy Die Cast Chassis
- Five-Pole Skew-Wound Armature Motor
- 8-Wheel Drive & All-Wheel Electrical Pickup
- Dual Machined Brass Flywheels
- RP-25 Metal Wheels
- Directional Lighting
- Micro-Trains Rear Knuckle Coupler

Stock Checks:
Inventory is a fluid commodity. It changes by the
hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure
we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each
year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order
in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm
that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order
it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson.
When we held items for customers’ orders, the order
never materialized 80%+ of the time. We lost out on
the orders placed while the item was on hold. Also
we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual
orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact
that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not
mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms
pages, we don’t do it anymore. You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items
are available and if possible attempt to locate what we
don’t have while you are on the phone. |
