Chicago & North Western
Features - Ready-to-Run, plastic-injected body,
full interiors, realistic undercarriage details, MT couplers.
The Chicago & North Western bought 32 - 1956 Pullman-Standard
bilevel commuter coaches to modernize their aging fleet
of cars. This model reflects the time prior to rebuilding
and implementation for push-pull operations in 1961 with
a revised paint scheme from the original. These car rode
on 41 NV trucks (which differs from the 1960s bilevel sets)
and were equipped with Waukesha 7-1/2 KW Enginator for electrical
power. Heating came from the steam-generator equipped locomotives
such as GP7s. The CNW originally marketed these new trainsets
as "Superbanite."

No. 119 S.P. Streamstyled 60' Harriman Railway Post Office
(RPO) for the Lark and the Mail trains.
Kit includes authentic body and undercarriage, decals
for lettering, number, logo and stripes; brass etched details,
diaphragms, instructions. Requires #1018 Micro-Trains 3-axle
truck, painting and (easy) assembly .
Before the ZIP code, mail was sorted on railway
cars dedicated for the postal service and not in fixed plant
buildings. When the Southern Pacific Railroad reintroduced
their premier Pullman train, the Lark (Train Nos. 75 &
76), between L.A. and S.F. in 1941 - in all new two-tone gray
colors, they modernized these distinctive railroad cars that
would carry the all important headend business: U.S. mail.
The RPOs provided much need revenues for passenger trains
during the late 1950's and 1960s.
These 60' Railway Post Office (RPO) cars were
rebuilt from 1920 Pullman 60' baggage cars. The RPO provided
the Postal Service with a full 60' compartment to collect,
sort and deliver mail on the fly. The interior of the RPO
were outfitted to the plans and specifications of the U.S.
Government Railway Mail Service. They were staff by mail clerks
and not railroad employees.
Stylized with streamstyled roofs, full length
skirts, and full width diaphragms, they match the streamlined
Lark train. The center skirts for the baggage cars and RPOs
were removed sometime in the mid to late 40's to facilitate
ease of maintainance (according to photographs). The full
width diaphragms were removed due to mechanical maintenance
issues in the 50's (according to photographs). Later, these
cars served their final years on the secondary mail trains
such as the Coast Mail. Some cars were repainted in the solid
gray.
For photographs of these cars, please see
SP Passenger Trains Vol. 1 by Ryan/Shine, Four Way West Publications,
1986; and the Official Pullman-Standard Library Vol. 5 by
Randall/Ross, Railway Production Classics, 1989.
We hope you'll enjoy collecting these cars
- a reminder of the rich railroading past.

No. 118 S.P. Streamstyled 70' Harriman Baggage for
the Lark and the Mail trains.
Kit includes authentic body and undercarriage, decals for
lettering, number, logo and stripes; brass etched details,
diaphragms, instructions. Requires #1018 Micro-Trains 3-axle
truck, painting and (easy) assembly .
When the Southern Pacific Railroad reintroduced
their premier Pullman train, the Lark (Train Nos. 75 &
76), between L.A. and S.F. in 1941 - in all new two-tone gray
colors, they modernized two distinctive railroad cars that
would carry the important headend business of express shipments.*
The 70' baggage & express cars were rebuilt
from 1927 Bethlehem Harriman baggage cars. These cars carried
the Lark train express shipment. They also were assigned to
the Coaster, and the Cascade and mail trains. These cars also
operated on the San Joaquin Daylight and the Noon Daylight
in the famous orange, red and black scheme.
Stylized with streamstyled roofs, full length
skirts, and full width diaphragms, they match their streamlined
trains. The center skirts for the baggage cars and RPOs were
removed sometime in the mid to late 40's to facilitate ease
of maintainance (according to photographs). The full width
diaphragms were removed due to mechanical maintenance issues
in the 50's (according to photographs). Later, these cars
served their final years on the secondary mail trains such
as the Coast Mail. Some cars were repainted in the solid gray.
However, streamstyled baggage car no. 6083 continued to carry
the "Lark" emblem and the original two-tone gray
until the car was scrapped.
For photographs of these cars, please see
SP Passenger Trains Vol. 1 by Ryan/Shine, Four Way West Publications,
1986; and the Official Pullman-Standard Library Vol. 5 by
Randall/Ross, Railway Production Classics, 1989.
