Some
quick notes:
Great
Northern Railway originally purchased steel underframe,
wood sheathing baggage and express cars from Barney
& Smith in 1909. They were rebuilt with steel sheathing
and stronger underframe at the Jackson Street Shops
at St. Paul from 1922 to 1926. Remodeling in this manner
made them suitable for use in all steel Pullman consist
trains.
Some
of these cars lasted in BN maintenance way service which
attest to the durablilty of GN’s rebuilding program
- that is some 46 years later!
These
cars ran in GN trains such as the Fast Mail Nos. 27
and 28, International Limited, the Badger Express, the
Winnipeg Limited, and the Cascadian. They carried the
all important express, sealed mail and baggage business.

Some
quick notes:
When Southern Pacific introduced their San Joaquin
Daylight Trains Nos. 51 and 52‡, they required
additional baggage cars to 'pinch hit' when the normally
assigned baggage-chair cars are in need of repair. SP
No. 6029 was one of the two Daylight painted 60-ft Harriman
baggage cars so assigned. This baggage car was class
60-B-8, an ACF product of 1918 and was equipped with
Utility roof vents. Prior to 1926, it was leased to
SPdeM as No. 2516 before returning to SP. This model
is from late 1946 to end of life in early 1960s. It
was never repainted gray. During periods when not assigned
to the SJ Daylights, these substitute baggage cars were
used in other train service such as the Owl, and the
Coast Mail.

Some
quick notes:
Western Pacific's seldom
photographed arched roof baggage cars were Harriman
like in a lot of respects. Constructed in 1923 by the
Press Steel Company, and numbered 121 to 140, they carried
the all important L.C.L. express package business, company
mail and baggage. They were equipped with Utility roof
vents. Heavyweight baggage-express cars were used on
trains such as the Royal Gorge from St. Louis to Oakland
(a joint MP-Rio Grande-WP train) or the Exposition Flyer
- inaugurated on 10th of June 1939 to the Golden Gate
International Exposition from Chicago Union Station
(a joint CB&Q-Rio Grande-WP train).
* Railroad had very similar cars but
not exact prototype. |

|
Some
quick notes:
During the late 1950's and early 1960's, Espee converted a number of their heavyweight passenger cars for Maintenance of Way services, since the reduction in passenger train service in conjunction with the newer lightweight equipment made these standard cars obsolete. MW 4760 is one such car that was downgraded yet still was in a good state of repair. It belonged to SP Common Standard 214, class 60-B car. The actual car number when it was in revenue service is not known. |

Some
quick notes:
Burlington Northern Railroad inherited GN Maintenance of Way baggage cars such as this one. This car was renumbered in 1976 as BN 976140 (nee X73841966 in 1966). Prior to being in MW service, it was no. 378. Originally built by Barney and Smith in 1909 as #1679. Converted to stell-sheathed car in 1926. It was sold to Luria Brothers in 1981 for scrap. It served GN-BN for 72 years. While our model here is a good representation of BN 976140, it is not the exact prototype. |

Some
quick notes:
Originally, this car was a 1911 railway post office car, class 60-P-4. Espee rebuilt this to a baggage car in Dec. 1941, retaining the original 6-wheel trucks. It was reclassified as 60-B. A photo of this car appears in SP passenger Cars Volume 3: Head End Equipment on page 371. The 1958 photo shows it in the two-tone gray paint. |

Some
quick notes:
At one time the Northwestern Pacific was jointly owned by Santa Fe and Southern Pacific railroads. SP bought Santa Fe's portion on January 17, 1929. With ferry connections at Sausalito and Tiburon, NWP trains ran just north of the Golden Gate through the beautiful redwoods up to the far reaches of Eureka, California. NWP freight-only ferry connection ended with Santa Fe's abandonment of their carloft operations in the 1980's. No. 3 &4, "The Redwood", passenger trains were pulled by SP steam generator equipped SD-7's or Sd-9's with their large ash can lights. This train connected with the California Western Railroad fable "Sunk Trains." This baggage-express car was a batch ordered by parent SP from Pullman in 1915 and build to Common Standard Specifications 214, NWP class 60-B. They weighed about 93,800 lbs. No. 678 was retired in Feb. 1960. |

This explains the 6-wheel truck to carry the heavier weight of mail. These cars have an average unloaded weight of 117,380 lbs and with a coupled length of nominally 64-ft. No. 583 is painted in the traditional dark olive paint scheme. |

Stock Checks:
Inventory is a fluid commodity. It changes by the
hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure
we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each
year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order
in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm
that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order
it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson.
When we held items for customers’ orders, the order
never materialized 80%+ of the time. We lost out on
the orders placed while the item was on hold. Also
we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual
orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact
that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not
mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms
pages, we don’t do it anymore. You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items
are available and if possible attempt to locate what we
don’t have while you are on the phone. |
