In June 1942, UP built these 40’ standard box cars with single door at their Omaha, Nebraska shops. They were painted UP mineral red and lettered in yellow. The class B-50-33 box car was part of a 749 car fleet that featured the slogan, ‘Be Specific - ship Union Pacific’ on one side and the ‘Road of the Streamliners’ slogan on the other side.

This 40’ standard box car with single door is painted dark green and lettered in yellow for the New York, Susquehanna & Western Railway (NYSW). From a group of 24 cars built in May 1936, it was painted in this scheme in September 1964. The unique Susie-Q icon is dressed in her railroad outfit of blue, gray and red, and waves a red and yellow oncoming signal lamp. The NYSW connects with other roads including Conrail, CP Rail Systems, and Stourbridge Railroad.

Originally built at the Despatch Shops in East Rochester, New York for the Northern Refrigerator Car Line during the winter of 1957-58, these cars were acquired when Merchants Despatch Transportation (controlled by the New York Central railroad) purchased the NRC in about 1928. The NRC operated under MDT control as a separate entity until about 1962 when it was merged into the MDT.

This D&RGW is part of a small six-car order, sub-group 67420-67426, these 40-foot hy-cubes were built at Pullman-Standard’s Bessemer Plant in November 1967 as lot 9256A; they were an addition to an earlier CB&Q order and were placed into appliance service. Assigned to the EL at Marion, OH., they are equipped with Hydroframe-40 cushion underframes, fitted with Equipco Load dividers and rated at 4730 cuft. capacity, allowing for the interior load dividers.

This 100 ton three-bay hopper with rib sides and coal load is painted black with white herald and lettering. It was built in June 1968 by Bethlehem Steel, serviced in July 1972, and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. It’s decorated in block lettering and is one of 200 cars in the series 1001-1200. In 1823 New York State passed an act incorporating the “The President, Mangers and Company of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Co.” and in 1926 was granted authorization to build a railroad. The D&H has called itself “America’s oldest continually operated transportation company”, operating from 1829 until its purchase by the
Canadian Pacific railroad in 1991.

This RPO heavyweight passenger car is painted maroon with black roof and displays gold lettering. Built by Pullman in 1918 this RPO is numbered 3759. Mail sorting on trains, in dedicated post office cars, was an established procedure by the time the transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869.

This 83’ Pullman heavyweight sleeper 12-1 is painted green with gold herald and lettering. Roof is black. The cars road name is Berkeley, ran in the 1930s and runs on six-wheel passenger trucks. ‘12-1’ (12 Section-1 Drawing Room) is a named car and built for general service by the Pullman company from Pullman Plan #3410. It was named in honor of the SP station located on the east side of San Francisco Bay in Berkeley, CA. Many of SP’s sleeper cars were named after stations along their
passenger route.

This 3-2 Heavyweight Observation Car is painted Pullman green with gold letters. “BURLINGTON” letters are stenciled across the top letter board centered under the roof with no name and RD# 87 stenciled centered under the windows. Office car #87 was built 1913 and purchased from Pullman in 1948, with other sleepers. It was converted to an office car in 1951.

As early as the late 1800s excursion trains were used to bring in patrons from surrounding towns to see the circus. The use of these special passenger trains proved to be very successful and quickly became common practice for the circus. In fact, excursion trains not only generated a significant amount of business for the circus, but were also a bonus for the local railroads as well.
