This 40’ standard box car with plug door is car #41 of a 50-car series representing each of the 50 states in the union.  It bears the Western Meadowlark and Wild Prairie Rose, North Dakota’s official state bird and flower. The flag of the state of North Dakota is in the background. The road number 1889 represents the year ‘The Peace Garden State’ was admitted into the union.

U.S. Navy Series Car #2 bears the silhouette of the Essex Class Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Hornet, CV-12. Commissioned in 1943, the Hornet served in the Pacific Theater throughout World War II, and was regularly dispatched to the 7th fleet in the Far East during the Vietnam conflict. Measuring 872 feet long with a beam of 147-1/2 feet, the Hornet was capable of cruising in excess of 32 knots. Her place in history was secured in the late 1960’s as the recovery carrier for Apollo space missions.

This Black 60’ 8” Thrall centerbeam flat car has large white “Center Beam” lettering and runs on black Barber roller bearing trucks. Thrall Manufacturing Co. built this ten car series for Western Pacific in November of 1977. These cars were from a design used by Canadian National and centerbeam cars soon became an industry standard due to the ease of loading and securing lumber loads. WP was one of the first roads to use this new design.

This box car red 50’ standard car with plug and single sliding doors and no roofwalk has black ends, aluminum roof and white ‘Action Road’ paint scheme and runs on black roller bearing trucks. Built in June of 1967 by General American Transportation Corp., this 100 car series has a combination eight-foot sliding door and seven-foot auxiliary plug door. Most of the Grande’s combination door cars were used in general service. The 15-foot total opening also made them adaptable for hauling wallboard and forest products. Cars are equipped with a 20-inch travel cushioned underframe.

This blue 50’ standard box car with plug door and no roofwalk has an aluminum roof, black, white & blue Fraser Paper logo and runs on black Barber roller bearing trucks with blue draft gear lids. The Bangor and Aroostook Railroad was incorporated in 1891, combining the Bangor and Piscataquis Railroad and the Bangor and Katahdin Railroad. In 1893, the railroad was extended to Houlton, and a year later it reached Caribou and Fort Fairfield. By the early 1900’s, the BAR served the localities of Patten, Limestone, Ashland, Van Buren, and Searsport. The primary source of traffic for the BAR is, of course, the pulp and paper industry.

This “Action Yellow” 40’ box car with plug door, no roofwalk and tall ladders has a white and black “Multimark” logo, black lettering and runs on black Bettendorf trucks. In June 1968, Canadian Pacific introduced a new corporate image for their entire company. Freight cars were painted in solid colors by type: ‘Action Yellow’ for insulated cars and cabooses; ‘Action Green’ for newsprint; ‘Action Red’ for general merchandise box cars, gondolas and flat cars and ‘Action Silver’ for refrigerator cars. The uniquely designed “Multimark” consisted of a circle segment and a triangle. In 1988, CP Rail stopped applying the Multimark when repainting freight cars.

This PS-2, 70-ton two-bay covered hopper is painted grey with the “Shadow Keystone” logo and lettering in black and runs on black Bettendorf trucks.   PRR constructed the 400 class H34A covered hoppers at Altoona during June 1955, using components fabricated by Pullman-Standard.  The roof hatches have been moved outward toward the car ends and have been stenciled with the less stylized variation of PRR’s “Calendar” font.  The H34-types were the first PRR covered hopper cars to be turned out new in gray paint with black stenciling.

This 50’ rib side box car with single door and no roofwalk is painted CSX blue has an aluminum roof, yellow lettering and runs on black roller bearing trucks. CSX is one of the Super Seven, including the oldest common carrier rail road in the U.S., the Baltimore & Ohio, and the shortest-lived Seaboard System. On Nov. 1, 1980, Chessie System, the holding company, parent of the Chesapeake and Ohio, Baltimore & Ohio and Western Maryland, merged with Seaboard Coast Line to form CSX Corporation. The name of the Seaboard System Railroad was changed to CSX on July 1, 1986. CSX Transportation merged the C&O Railway on Aug. 31, 1987. Many cars were cut up in 1995.
