Road Number HI 1959

This 40’ standard box car with plug door is car #35 of a 50-car series representing each of the 50 states in the union. It bears the Nene and Hibiscus flower, Hawaii’s official state bird and flower. The flag of the state of Hawaii is in the background. The road number 1959 represents the year ‘The Aloha State’ was admitted into the union.

his box car red 89’ tri-level open auto rack runs on black Barber® roller bearing trucks. The black placard proudly displays the Erie Lackawanna herald in white. This flat car is designated FA Class, defined as a flat car specifically equipped with multi-level racks or decks for the lading and transporting of set-up vehicles is not suitable for other miscellaneous commodities. Typically, the railroad would furnish the racks and Trailer Train Co. would furnish the flat car. Racks of a given lot were placed on whatever TTX cars were available. Consequently, the racks in a given number series would be applied on cars with an assorted set of car numbers.

50’ Standard Boxcar w/ Double Plug Doors

Road Number ATSF 48050


This 50’ standard box car with double plug doors has red sides and black roof and ends. It has white and yellow ”Super Shock Control,” lettering with a white Santa Fe Circle Cross logo and runs on black Barber® roller bearing trucks. ATSF 48050 is a Class Fe-37 Pullman-Standard box car from lot 8940 out of Michigan City. Classification “Fe” is an anachronism from earlier days when double door cars were used for furniture loading. Cars in this series were equipped with 20” cushion underframes and completed with Apex or Morton running boards, Dowlec flooring and lading anchors.

Heavyweight Depressed Center Flat Car

Road Number ACL 79104


This black heavyweight depressed-center flat car with drag line bucket load has white lettering and runs on black commonwealth freight trucks. #79104 is one of nine cars in this series of depressed-center flat cars built at the ACL Waycross shops in May of 1957. This car was still seen working the rails in 1972. Fully loaded, this car was only 7-3/8” above the rails.

This Chinese red 50’ steel side, 15 panel, fixed end gondola with low cover has large white ’Burlington’ letters, red and black Burlington Route logo and runs on black roller bearing trucks. Built in January of 1958, as a class GM-4A, Burlington rebuilt the 25 cars in this series in April of 1959 at their Havelock shops by raising the sides and ends 14” and adding roofs, bulkheads and wood floors. The cars kept their original numbers and were reclassified GM-4C with an increased capacity of 2,259 cu. ft.

Road Number TLDX 33


This pale grey 50’ standard box car with plug doors has large black ’Jewel’ letters, red and brown Jewel logos and runs on black Barber® roller bearing trucks. This car with the Jewel Tea Company paint scheme was built by Pullman-Standard out of Michigan City, Indiana, in August of 1963. Numbered into the TLDX series 33-39, #33 is part of a seven car order from lot 8822. Cars 33 & 34 were painted for the Jewel Tea Company, while 35 thru 39 were painted for Libby’s Famous Foods. Some cars remained in their original paint into the 1970’s.

British Columbia Railway
40' Standard Box Car, Plug Door
P/N: 021 00 230

Road Number BCOL 8006

This green 40’ standard box car with plug door has BC provincial orange, white & green Dogwood Flower logo, white lettering and runs on black Bettendorf trucks. Built in November 1961, and serviced in February of 1979, #8006 originally wore a Pacific Great Eastern paint scheme. After the government changed the railroad name in 1972, this 12-car fleet was repainted at the BC Rail livery with this orange, white & green Dogwood Flower paint scheme. They were insulated and heater equipped, making the cars useful for a variety of commodities. The series entered into MOW service in the mid 1980’s.

This 50’ standard box car with plug door has ATSF red sides, black roof and ends. It has white and yellow ”Super Shock Control,” lettering with a white Santa Fe Circle Cross logo and runs on black roller bearing trucks. The SFRB is 1 of 49 “Shock Control” insulated RBL cars in this road series that were built in the Topeka Shops in 1962. Class RR-73 cars were assigned principally to the loading of commodities such as beer or wine that required protection from freezing temperatures. Notice the yellow placard in the upper left hand corner announcing special insulation. The RBL classification indicates an insulated refrigerator car constructed to A.A.R. standards and additionally equipped with adjustable loading or stowing device.

Seaboard Coast Line®
Road Number SCL 698045

This black 50’ gondola with fishbelly sides and drop ends carries a scrap load, has white lettering and runs on black roller bearing trucks. Built in November of 1971, this gondola was classified as G-3, has a rated capacity of 154,000 lbs. and was shopped at Emerson shops at Rocky Mount in May of 1973. It was part of a 100 car fleet. The railroad was headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida.
