REPRINT
Southern Railway
40' 40' Stock Car, Single Door
Road Number 45784

This 40’ dispatch stock car with single door is painted box car red with white lettering and runs on black Bettendorf trucks. In building the SOU 45650-46002 road series for Southern Railway, Ralston Steel Car Co. employed a new innovation in stock car floor covering. A mixture of asphaltum, sand, concrete and cork, much like asphalt except substituting cork for stone, was applied to the interior flooring. This created an exceptionally resilient surface which afforded sure footing for the live stock and reducing injuries from slips and falls.
