40' Standard Box Car, Plug Door
West Virginia State Car
Road Number WV 1863
This 40’ standard box car with plug door representing
the state of West Virginia is car #22 of a 50-car series for
each of the 50 states in the union. It is painted dark blue
with aluminum sides and sports the Cardinal and Rosebay Rhododendron
flower, West Virginia’s official bird and flower. The
flag of the state of West Virginia is in the background. The
road number 1863 is the year the ‘Mountain State’
was admitted to the Union .

Road Number FEC 15178
This
red 3-Bay Ortner rapid discharge hopper has large, white
FEC letters and runs on black Barber® Roller bearing
trucks. This car also displays the Ortner aggregate car
warning sign, ‘Deadly Crossings.’ 300 cars numbered
into the 15000-15299 series HT class are rated at 100 tons;
the 3-Bay Ortner can hold 2,300 cu. ft. level full and falls
within ‘Plate C’ clearances. Most of the three-bay
cars were owned by and in captive service of construction
& utility companies, traveling in unit train fleets
used for the transport of heavy material like stone aggregate,
iron ore or limestone .

This
yellow 89’ tri-level closed auto rack has the black
and white TTX logo, black lettering and runs on black Barber®
Roller bearing trucks. The first auto racks had exposed sides
that led to vehicle damage from vandalism and weather, in
the early 1970’s the railroads started to enclose them
with steel mesh. Auto Racks are one of the most commonly seen
cars on the railroads today.

This bright 34’ wood-sheathed caboose with straight
cupola has red sides, yellow ends and black roofs with white
lettering and runs on black Bettendorf swing motion caboose
trucks. Built in the early ‘40’s by the CP Angus
Shops, wood sheathed caboose #437211 was numbered into series
435018-437264 in 1956,it received this paint scheme at the
Angus Shops in the early’70’s.

Road Number GATX 8556
This black 39’ single dome tanker is black, stenciled
with white “REPUBLIC” on the right side of the
car, “CUMBERLAND” on the opposite side, and runs
on black Bettendorf trucks. Built by American Car & Foundry
Co. at their Milton, PA. Plant, these propane tank cars were
owned by the Cumberland Gasoline Corporation and operated
by General American Transportation Corporation. By January
1943, these four cars were reassigned to the Cumberland Gasoline
Corporation with CGAX reporting marks.

SP brown rib side boxcar with double Youngstown doors and
roofwalk has white lettering and yellow “Cushion-Car”

came equipped with centered double doors, nailable floor
and end-of-car cushioning.

These
50’ flat cars with fishbelly sides and side mount
brakewheel are drab olive green with the white Transportation
Corps logo, consisting of a ship’s wheel, with a
winged car wheel on a rail inside a shield, and run on
black Bettendorf
trucks. This car was built in July, 1953 by Magor Car Company
of New York. The Transportation Corps was established by
the War Department in 1918, and has played a part in every
major battle this country has ever entered.

This 50’ rib side box car with single door,
no roofwalk, was built by Burlington Northern in January 1975.
It is painted BN green with white lettering on the sides and
ends, and runs on black Roller Bearing trucks. This fleet
could be equipped with either wood cradles for aluminum or
copper rods, or wood platforms to accommodate copper ingots,
cathodes and other castings.

Road Number SAL 25196
This 40’ standard box car with single superior door
and roofwalk is dazzling in aluminum paint and a red ‘Through
the Heart of the South’ logo with black heart. It
runs on black Bettendorf trucks. The cars were equipped
with insulated roofs, and the aluminum paint provided additional
temperature control for beer handling and so replaced the
standard Box Car Red in the various “beer car”.
The ACL®, B&O®, Seaboard Air Line®, Seaboard
Coast Line®, Chessie®, Chesapeake & Ohio®,
Louisville and Nashville® are the property of CSX Transportation

39’ single dome tank car is painted black with white
logo and lettering. It was built in July 1949 at CB&Q’s
Havelock shop and runs on black Bettendorf trucks. Tankers
in this 200-car series of TM-6 company service cars were
used primarily for diesel fuel and lube oil service.

Southern Pacific Company®
Road Number S.P.C. 472
This
box car red 30’ boxcar with single door with white
lettering and Sunset logo runs on brown Barber Coleman Archbar
trucks. SPC 472 was originally built for the Oregonian Railroad
in 1880 as car 230. The Oregonian Railroad was acquired
by the Southern Pacific and the car was transferred to the
SPC in 1899, where it was renumbered 472. The car was again
transferred in 1907, being sent to the Nevada and California
Railway, still another SP property, where it became Southern
Pacific 443.
