Second-Release Info
Prototype Information —

The “Super Chief” was one of the named passenger trains of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. It was the only all Pullman train to operate on the Santa Fe main line between Chicago and Los Angeles and operated typically with 12 cars.

The train was usually pulled by an F7 A-B-B-A combination with our models time period being 1956 to 1958.

We selected the most popular time period of 1956 – 1958 when this train was operated and
promoted and advertised by the AT&SF RR as its premier all Pullman train between Chicago
and Los Angeles.

In January 1958, the all coach “El Capitan” and the “Super Chief” were consolidated but during the high traffic periods (Christmas and summer months), the “Super Chief” ran separate from the “El Capitan”.

You will now have the opportunity to operate the “Super Chief” and also the “El Capitan” with all the correct cars. You can even combine the two trains and run as one just like the Santa Fe did in real life. The train can also be operated with 5 locomotives as F7A-A-B-B-A.

Wig-Wag Note: Moving to Albuquerque in July 1969, George was able to get to the depot on Sundays once he got a driving permit. At the depot he was able to photograph many combined Super-El Cap's arriving westbound with an A-B-A-B-B-B consist. The lead B-unit would be removed before the train continued west. Eastbound the train would arrive A-A-B-B-B and the additional B-unit would be added to cross Glorieta and Raton Passes.

An additional 4 car set is available to add to this set so the entire 12 car train can be modeled.

Typical 8-car Consist

Model Features —
  • Each car will have the beautiful "stainless steel" body.
  • Each car will be equipped with low flange wheels, KATO magnetic knuckle couplers and shock absorber construction for smooth and reliable operation.

About the Super Chief car set "C"

Set C of the Super Chief lineup consists of four dormitory cars, the ACF 10-6 and the ACF 4-4-2 sleeper. The number designations indicated the number of different rooms of a certain type. In the case of the 10-6 it meant 10 roomettes and 6 double bedrooms, while for the 4-4-2 it meant 4 compartments, 2 drawing rooms, and 4 double bedrooms.

Sleeper room names and meanings:

  • Roomette - A small private compartment in the sleeping car of a train, usually for one person, containing its own washroom facilities and a bed that folds against the wall when not in use.
  • Drawing room - A private room for two or three passengers.
  • Compartment - A private bedroom with toilet facilities.
  • Double Bedroom - A double-occupancy bedroom.

Super Chief Consists.
Here's a shot of a classic Super Chief Turquoise Room (Diner) ashtray.

3 steps to enjoy the “Super Chief”
The concept behind the release of only individual F7A and F7B units
and three separate passenger car sets is to:
  1. Allow you, the end-user, to make a 1st purchase of 1 F7A unit plus Car Set A so that you can enjoy the operation of a “Super Chief” short consist.
  2. Later, you can expand on the initial purchase and buy an additional F7B unit plus Car Set B to enjoy the “Super Chief” with additional necessary cars.
  3. Even later, you can complete the “Super Chief” set by purchasing an additional F7B plus Car Set C.  You may even add another F7A unit at this time or wait and purchase it on a following order from Wig-Wag, LLC.
Part #: 106-6001 Santa Fe Super Chief - Passenger Set A:

About the Super Chief car set "B"

The second Super Chief Set contains the more business and haulage oriented cars, with a baggage and an RPO (Rail Post Office) car, accompanied by a lounge car and an ACF 10-6 Sleeper car. The Baggage and RPO cars are visually distinctive from their passenger oriented bretheren due to their shorter length as well as the circular air vents (for temperature regulation in the Southwestern heat). Passenger cars lacked these vents due to their enclosed air conditioning and heating systems.

Stock Checks:

Inventory is a fluid commodity.  It changes by the hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson. When we held items for customers’ orders, the order never materialized 80%+ of the time.  We lost out on the orders placed while the item was on hold.  Also we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms pages, we don’t do it anymore. You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items are available and if possible attempt to locate what we don’t have while you are on the phone.
