Kato’s “Starter Series” sets are basic train sets that include a locomotive and a number of cars to provide a simple yet high-quality introductory train. They can be paired with additional car releases for expansion and can be paired with Kato’s M1/M2 series of track sets to create a fun and easy starter set.

The Amtrak Intercity Express 3-Car set is an add-on for the Starter Series and is packaged in a collectible Bookcase style box which has space for three additional cars and a locomotive. These spaces can be used to hold the contents of the “Starter Series” set or any additional locomotives and cars a modeler may be interested in (or already have in their collection).

The Carbodies of both the Viewliners and the Amfleet cars are meticulously recreated with crisply molded fluting down the sides and the distinct shape of each car. - Phase IV shown for reference -

Did You Know?

"Phase VI" commonly referred to by modelers and railfans as "Phase IVb" , Amtrak's official name for its most modern paint scheme that carries its new logo is "Phase VI" - this is denoted by the removal of most of the block lettering on the sides of the cars (whether it's the bold sweeping "Superliner" lettering on the double decker cars or simply the "Amtrak" lettering in the stripes on the smaller cars) and the addition of Amtrak's new logo.

This is the first time the Amfleet II will be manufactured in N scale – and will feature the care and eye for prototype details as well as running performance that KATO is famous for. Coupled with KATO’s award winning GE P42 locomotive, and this complete 1990’s Amtrak train set is a must for any fan of Amtrak, passenger trains, or N scale modeling in general.

Stock Checks:

Inventory is a fluid commodity.  It changes by the hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson. When we held items for customers’ orders, the order never materialized 80%+ of the time.  We lost out on the orders placed while the item was on hold.  Also we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms pages, we don’t do it anymore. You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items are available and if possible attempt to locate what we don’t have while you are on the phone.
