Superliner Cars
|
Background Information —
Amtrak currently operates Superliner 1 and Superliner 2
cars. Delivery of the original Superliner 1 cars began in
1979 with the first cars operating on short runs originating
in Seattle and Chicago. As more cars arrived, entire Superliner
trainsets replaced trains on existing Western routes. The
height of a Superliner generally precludes its operating
in the Northeast because of tunnel clearance concerns.
Kato's models are based on the five Superliner 1 car types.
They are: Coach-Baggage, Coach, Diner, Sleeper, and Lounge.
Model Features —
All cars are factory equipped with the Kato fully-automatic
knuckle coupler and feature finely lettering with car number
and other markings. Interiors of the cars can be lighted
with the installation of our 11-204 (single) or
11-206 (6-pack) lighting kits. DCC users should use the
11-209(single) or 11-210 (6-pack) light sets with LED
The new release will be the first offered by Kato in the
Phase II scheme.

Background
Information — |
When
Amtrak began operations, they acquired
a large number of passenger and baggage cars that
had previously been owned by various railroads. Because
of the importance of their service, a large number
of baggage cars were repainted and remained in the
Phase I paint scheme for many years.
Two
of Amtrak's "smoothside" baggage cars came from Union
Pacific and were renumbered as 1075 and 1076 when
they were repainted for Amtrak. The Phase I paint
scheme is an excellent match for the Phase II paint
scheme that appears on the Superliners also being
produced by Kato. |

Material Handling Cars

Background Information —
Amtrak rosters two types of MHC cars, or Material Handling
Cars. They are known by modelers as MHC-1 or MHC-2. The
original 1400-series MHC-1 cars were built by Thrall in
1986 utilizing rebuilt trucks from former REA express cars
with a short wheelbase; this car has been previously offered
by Con-Cor.
In 1989 Amtrak began receiving a second version of the MHC,
the MHC-2, which carry road numbers in the 1500-series.
These cars differed in some notable ways. The trucks were
a new design that had a longer wheelbase than the earlier
cars. Further, there was a body snubber anchor mounted on
the sides of the car above each truck. These two details
are the most obvious differences between the two car series,
however the body and roof are entirely different from the
earlier cars.
Model Features —
This production of the MHC-2 will be decorated in Amtrak's
Phase IV paint scheme. All cars are factory equipped with
Kato's Magnetic Knuckle Coupler with fine lettering. Cars
will be equipped with trucks that have pickup contacts.
This will facilitate modeler installation of aftermarket
End of Train / Flashing Rear End Devices (EOT/FRED). NOTE:
Kato does not manufacture EOT/FRED kits.
