N-Scale SD40-2 Mid-Production Version
We
are excited to announce the introduction of the N scale
EMD SD40-2 Mid-Production Version of the Santa Fe and BNSF.

Click on Picture to see larger version.
Prototype Information —
The
BN amassed a fleet of 827 SD40-2's. They started out hauling
coal trains out of Wyoming's Powder River Basin and then
started moving transcontinental freight between the West
Coast and the Midwest. The CN - IC Repaint has generated
interest from both the Canadian modelers and the U.S. modelers
because of the IC (Illinois Central) markings on a CN locomotive.
Built originally for the Burlington Northern, they were
later purchased by the Illinois Central and are now owned
by the Canadian National. They are used with other CN power
on all types of freight service and are occasionally used
in pool service with other roads.
-
More
than 3,100 units were built by Electro-Motive Division
(EMD) from January 1972 through February 1986.
-
With 16 cylinders producing 3000hp, the
SD40-2 road switcher was "practically the standard
locomotive of the late 1970's and early 1980's."
-
Perhaps
the most recognizable feature of the SD40-2 is the wide
"porch" at each end of the locomotive's walkway.
-
Besides
being an electronic"upgrade" of the preceding
SD40, the Dash 2 was also equipped with the new hi-adhesion
HTC trucks.
-
Many
of these locomotives are still in service today for the
original purchasing railroad or a second-hand operator.
Model Features —
These
models will have the appearance "after 1990", which will
include ditch lights so the modeler can use them with their
modern freights and in combination with other modern locos.
Note the ditch lights on these units will be deck mounted,
as was the prototype. They will also be equipped with anti-climbers.
- All
locomotives will be equipped with body mounted KATO magnetic
knuckle couplers.
- Locomotives
will feature directional Golden White LED headlight and
illuminated preprinted number boards.
- Lighted
ditch lights
- Shock
absorber construction for reliable performance
- Locomotives
will be DCC friendly
- All
6 axles powered
- Low
flange wheels

About the Santa
Fe SD40-2:
In early 1988, Santa Fe began relocating
the headlights on its power from above the cab windows
to the nose in an attempt to reduce glare reflected
into the cab during foggy or blizzard conditions.
This made the Mid Production Santa Fe SD40-2s (and
their descendents in the BNSF) different in form
to their cousins. Over the years, other changes were
made, including the migration of the airhorn further
away from the cab and the installation of air condinioners
to make the operation of their SD40-2s a more pleasant
experience for the crew. |

About the BNSF SD40-2:
A common BNSF paint scheme, the "pumpkin" green
and orange colors of the BNSF Heritage I paint scheme
mirror the colors of the Great Northern Railroad.
The original cross and circle company logo is displayed
on the nose of the locomotive, indicative of the
Heritage I coloration (Heritage II paint schemes
using a "cigar band" logo reminiscent of the ATSF
logo or a newer, more modern BNSF logo on the Heritage
III). |
