Prototype Information |
- The SD80MAC is one of today's most powerful locomotives,
seen throughout North America on Class I mainline railroads.
- Weighing in at more than 400,000 pounds and with a length
in excess of 80 feet, the SD80MAC is one of the heaviest
and longest single diesel locomotive in the world.
- The SD80/90MAC series was introduced by EMD in late 1995.
- Conrail was the first railroad to receive the SD80MAC
in early 1996. As it would turn out, Conrail would be the
only original buyer of this locomotive, even purchasing
both of the demonstrator units. CSX and Norfolk Southern
have since acquired these units.
The behemoth SD80MAC can generate up to 5,000 horsepower.
- The maximum speed of the SD80MAC is 75 mph.
The SD80MAC is equipped with the revolutionary radial
truck, the EMD HTCR-II, capable of reducing the angle of
wear between wheels and rail. While keeping the wheels
parallel to the direction of the track, this truck literally
steers the locomotive through curves. This new technology
improves locomotive adhesion and performance, eliminates
several conventional truck components, extends locomotive
component and track life and improves the ride quality.

Model Features |
- The split metal frame mechanism is "DCC-friendly" (designed
for easy drop-in installation of decoder).
- Equipped with bright white LED headlights.
- Lighted front-end ditch lights.
- 2nd Production and later models are equipped
with KatO automatic magnetic knuckle couplers.
- Printed numberboards (modeler install).
- Powerful KatO five-pole motor with dual brass flywheels
and chemically blackened metal wheels.
While these models are capable of operating on a 9-3/4" radius
curve, it is recommended they be run on curves no smaller
than an 11" radius to prevent the appearance of unrealistic
overhang.
Modeling era: 1995 to present.

Stock Checks:
Inventory is a fluid commodity. It changes by the
hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure
we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each
year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order
in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm
that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order
it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson.
When we held items for customers’ orders, the order
never materialized 80%+ of the time. We lost out on
the orders placed while the item was on hold. Also
we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual
orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact
that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not
mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms
pages, we don’t do it anymore. You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items
are available and if possible attempt to locate what we
don’t have while you are on the phone. |
