Prototype Information — |
- While
having some upgraded components, the F7 was essentially
the same locomotive as the earlier F3 locomotive.
- The
main external spotting features of the F7 include a new
linear stainless steel grille on the upper side, two portholes
with louvered vents on the A-unit, three portholes on the
B-unit and low roof fans.
- The first year of production of the 1500hp F7 by EMD was 1949.
- The
F7 was utilized in both passenger and freight service.
- Please
note Santa Fe's 300-Class locomotives were delivered as
ABB sets. They were numbered 300LAB, 301LAB, 302LAB, 303LAB,
etc.
- Great
Northern's were ABA sets.
Wig-Wag Notes below:
- From
the Great Northern Historical Society website we find that
this consist of 12 cars is apppropriate starting in 1947:
- "1947 February
23 saw the inauguration of the postwar edition of the
Empire Builder. These five consists of 12 streamlined
cars each were
built by Pullman. The trains were given a 45 hour schedule
between
Chicago and Seattle.
- These
trains were decked out from E unit to River series observation
car in an eye-popping Omaha Orange, Pullman Green and
gold stripe
paint scheme. What came to be known as the "Empire
Builder scheme"
became the standard for GN passenger trains for the next
20 years."
- Then
we find that this consist of locomotives is apppropriate
starting in 1950:
- "1950
-- E7
diesel passenger locomotives experience overheating
problems in the mountains. They are replaced by an A-B-A
set of EMD F units (F3's and F7's). Great Northern modified
these units into "Passenger F's" with higher
gearing for greater speed and boilers for steam heat."

In the early years of Amtrak service, when the Santa Fe was transitioning to a freight-only business, Amtrak was reliant on leased motive power for pulling its trains. The Santa Fe, wanting to differentiate their equipment that was to be used on the new Amtrak trains, began repainting the F7’s destined for Amtrak use in a new “Yellow Bonnet” scheme. A number of locomotives received this scheme, and although their service on Amtrak was brief many of these Yellow bonnets were returned to the Santa Fe for freight use after 1973.

Stock Checks:
Inventory is a fluid commodity. It changes by the
hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure
we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each
year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order
in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm
that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order
it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson.
When we held items for customers’ orders, the order
never materialized 80%+ of the time. We lost out on
the orders placed while the item was on hold. Also
we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual
orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact
that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not
mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms
pages, we don’t do it anymore. You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items
are available and if possible attempt to locate what we
don’t have while you are on the phone. |
