Southern Pacific (new road #'s)
Part #: DI-8032
Click photo to see large view Southern
Pacific's final decade of independence, saw a new image in the
form of the "Speed Letter" logo and a new commitment
to intermodal traffic. This group of 48' containers exemplifies
both of these trends. The inclusion of the traditional SP Sunset
logo on the nose and rear door of these containers added a lot
of class. The focus of SP's intermodal efforts was on the Sunset
Route from Southern California to New Orleans, St. Louis (over
Cotton Belt,) and Chicago (over Gateway Western.) Following
the merger with UP and as equipment trusts expired, many of
these containers went to CSX and other operators.

Itel Part #: DI-8190
Click photo to see large view Itel was
a major player in the world transportation equipment leasing
business. In North America, Itel rail cars, domestic and international
containers, and chassis have been a common sight. Itel, along
with Gelco and Cti would combine with Genstar to form the largest
international lease fleet. The "48x102" refers to
the length (in feet) and width (in inches) of these domestic
containers.

Allied Van Lines Part #: DI-8250
Click photo to see large view A moving
company with intermodal containers? That's right! Several of
Allied's franchisees operate 48' containers in both the rib
side and smooth side design seen here. The prototype containers
are equipped with flush fitting (to the point of being difficult
to see) curb side doors in addition to the rear doors to speed
loading and unloading. These containers do operate in stack
train service and occasionally on chassis on flat cars. The
two containers are sublettered for two different moving companies.
One belongs to Bluebird Transfer of Vancouver, Washington (right
across the river from Portland, Oregon.) The other is lettered
for Moore's Moving & Storage of Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Both prototypes were photographed in the same BNSF stack train
racing across the Lower Mojave desert earlier this year. As
you can see, the logos are reversed on each side of the container
so that the Highway 1 logo always points to the front of the
container. This kind of lettering arrangement is common on domestic
48' containers but rarely seen on international standard containers.

Stock Checks:
Inventory is a fluid commodity. It changes by the
hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure
we maintain stock levels designed to turnover 6 times each
year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order
in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm
that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order
it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson.
When we held items for customers’ orders, the order
never materialized 80%+ of the time. We lost out on
the orders placed while the item was on hold. Also
we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual
orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact
that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not
mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms
pages, we don’t do it anymore. You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items
are available and if possible attempt to locate what we
don’t have while you are on the phone. |
