Pullman
Standard 86’ Auto Parts Box Cars
Bluford Shops
is proud to announce N scale Pullman Standard 86’
Auto Parts Box Cars in both Double and Quad Door versions.
These cars have injection molded plastic bodies, etched
metal details, operating knuckle couplers, accurately appearing
trucks and cushion draft gear enclosures.
These cars first
appeared in the mid-60s and are still in use today. Unlike
general service freight cars, auto parts boxes are assigned
to pools based on a mileage formula and often spend most
of their time off home rails. In other words, “foreign
road” cars usually out-number home road cars in a
given parts train to the point that if you missed the locomotives
passing, you would have a hard time telling whose train
it was! That makes for colorful and interesting trains that
are fun to model.

Detroit & Toledo Shore Line received this batch of cars from Greenville early in 1970. The D&TS was just 50 miles long linking Detroit with Toledo but was double tracked and handled a large volume of traffic. Grand Trunk Western and Norfolk & Western (formerly Nickel Plate) each owned a 50% interest in the line. N&W used it to reach Detroit and GTW used it to reach Toledo. It's position gave it a vital role in the movement of auto parts. In 1981, GTW bought N&W ’s share and merged the line into its system. These cars joined the GTW fleet, some remaining in this paint scheme for close to two decades. |

Seaboard Coast Line, L&N, Georgia, Clinchfield,

Lines was not a single company, but rather a marketing
image. In 1983, L&N merged with Seaboard Coast
Line under the name Seaboard System and since the
two jointly controlled the other Family Lines roads,
they were included too. These cars are now part of

Barriger made new freight cars a priority and this

Missouri Pacific purchased 86’ boxcars under
the auspices of MP, Texas & Pacific, and Kansas
Oklahoma & Gulf subsidiaries, plus inheriting
some from Chicago & Eastern Illinois. In the late
70s, as the Screaming Eagle logo began to supplant
the old buzzsaw, MP was already changing the reporting
marks of these subsidiary cars to MP. This paint scheme
was being applied by the MoPac right up to the acquisition
by Union Pacific in 1983.. |

In 1980, Chicago & North Western changed from
boxcar red to this yellow and black scheme with a
three-color logo on many boxcars. The C&NW logos
also changed over the years. These cars were delivered
in brown with yellow and black “Chicago and
North Western Railway” logos which was later
replaced by “Employee - North Western - Owned”
but by the time these cars were painted yellow, they
had long since switched to “Chicago and North
Western System.” |

#: BS-86221 Union Pacific (UP) -- double door
single car |

|
In 1983, the merger-enlarged Union Pacific adopted
this paint scheme. Cars from the WP and MoPac fleets
carried their original road numbers. The single car
has a UP number while the 2-pack has Western Pacific
and Missouri Pacific road numbers. Note the variations
in placement of other lettering. Even the logo on
the UP car is in a different place. This kind of variation
seems to be common on today’s Union Pacific
fleet. |

CP Rail’s auto parts fleet includes former Milwaukee

the upper image. The painted door bars and area around
the door latches on this batch seems to be unique
to CP Rail. |
