Pullman Standard 86’ Auto Parts Box Cars

Bluford Shops is proud to announce N scale Pullman Standard 86’ Auto Parts Box Cars in both Double and Quad Door versions. These cars have injection molded plastic bodies, etched metal details, operating knuckle couplers, accurately appearing trucks and cushion draft gear enclosures.

These cars first appeared in the mid-60s and are still in use today. Unlike general service freight cars, auto parts boxes are assigned to pools based on a mileage formula and often spend most of their time off home rails. In other words, “foreign road” cars usually out-number home road cars in a given parts train to the point that if you missed the locomotives passing, you would have a hard time telling whose train it was! That makes for colorful and interesting trains that are fun to model.

Part #: BS-87121 Detroit & Toledo Shore Line (D&TS) - 86ft double door Hi-Cube boxcar single car
Click photo to see large view
Detroit & Toledo Shore Line received this batch of cars from Greenville early in 1970. The D&TS was just 50 miles long linking Detroit with Toledo but was double tracked and handled a large volume of traffic. It's position gave it a vital role in the movement of auto parts. In 1981, GTW bought N&W ’s share and merged the line into its system. These cars joined the GTW fleet, some remaining in this paint scheme for close to two decades.

Part #: BS-86221 Union Pacific (UP) -- double door single car
Click photo to see large view

In 1983, the merger-enlarged Union Pacific adopted this paint scheme. Cars from the WP and MoPac fleets carried their original road numbers. The single car has a UP number while the 2-pack has Western Pacific and Missouri Pacific road numbers. Note the variations in placement of other lettering. Even the logo on the UP car is in a different place. This kind of variation seems to be common on today’s Union Pacific fleet.
