Item Description
Atlas' high quality N Scale locomotive is modeled after Electro Motive Division's 2000 horsepower GP-38 diesel introduced in the late 1960s and built through the early 1970s and is still in service today throughout North America. The GP-38 is usually identified by its two radiator fans located on top of the long hood and two small exhaust stacks.

- Factory-equipped with AccuMate® knuckle couplers

From the RailModel Journal article on modeling a CN GP40:
"In 1966, Canadian National Railways (CN) initiated a major locomotive fleet expansion to address increased tonnage, to operate unit trains, and to improve service reliability/productivity in the highly competitive battle with the trucking industry. Over a 14-year period, which lasted until 1980, the railway purchased 759 new locomotives through 27 orders from GMD/GMDD, including the GP40, SD40, GP38-2, GP38-2W, GP40-2W, and SD40-2W models.
The first units of this program to arrive on the property were ten 3,000- horsepower, 259,000-pound GP40s, numbered 4002 to 4011 (Class GR-30a), in May to July 1966. A second order of GP40s, 4012 to 4017 (Class GR-30b), was delivered to CN in October 1967, after CN had sampled 8 SD40s. The SD40 ultimately became the model of choice for CN with another 233 units being added before the Dash 2 line was introduced in 1972. GMD did not sell another GP40, except for the eight modified GP40TC units for GO Transit in November – December 1996. As such, the GP40 is a unique workhorse in the historical context of the Canadian locomotive fleet and underscores a shift in motive power strategy from 4-axle to 6-axle mainline locomotives."
