Item Description
The Johnstown America BethGon® was developed for the
power industry in the late 1970s as a more
efficient means of transporting large quantities of coal.
These high-sided gondolas incorporated a double tub floor
design that not only lowered the center of gravity of the
loaded car, but also increase the hauling capacity by
21 tons per car. This new design was uniquely suited for
use with automated loading and unloading facilities
then being developed for use in the coal industry. These
improvements in material handling coupled with the use of the BethGon® provided
for a quantum increase in efficiency for both the railroads
and the
power generation industry.
By 1982, with enough cars having been built that if made
into a single train they would stretch from Pittsburgh
to Chicago, the BethGon® design was granted a patent
for this unique railcar. The design has continued to
evolve for even greater efficiency. The aluminum version
of the BethGon® that is now being delivered to
the railroads and power plants effectively lowers the tare
weight of this style of car while increasing
the payload. With a tare weight of 43,000 pounds and a
payload capacity of 244,000 pounds, the
BethGon® design is able to carry almost five times its
own weight.
The Athearn Ready-To-Roll™ model features the attention
to detail and operation that has become a
hallmark of the line. The BethGon® model has exquisite
detail incorporated in its state-of-the-art tooling.
To complement the crisply molded body and underframe, the
car features separate stand alone applied
details as well as full interior bracing. In addition,
separate metal grab irons are factory installed on this
completely assembled ready to operate car. A removable
cast
resin coal load that is subtly shaded to
fully capture the reflective nuance of real coal tops all
of this rich detail off. As with all models in the
Ready-To-Roll™ line, the cars are fully weighted
for optimum performance in addition to having
magnetically operated knuckle couplers and RP25 profile
metal wheel sets.
Available in five-packs with each car carrying a unique
road number, the new BethGon® will provide exemplary
service on layouts from coast to coast.

Detroit Edison, a subsidiary of DTE
Energy, provides electric power to most of southeast
Michigan. Much
of the power comes from several coal-fired plants. About
half of the Powder River coal used by Detroit Edison
goes by rail
to Superior, Wi., then by boat to the plants. Over 5 million
tons of coal took this route in 2004. The other half of
the coal is directly hauled to the plants by railroad. Detroit
Edison has over 4,000 cars in service with DEEX reporting
marks including Bethgons. |

Grand River Dam Authority (GRDX)
The Grand River Dam Authority
was created by the Oklahoma Legislature
in 1935 to be a “conservation and reclamation district
for the waters of the Grand River.” Part of this is
to provide electric power within the district in northeastern
Oklahoma. Most of GRDA's electric power is generated at the
Coal Fired Complex, near Choteau, Ok. on Union Pacific's
former
Missouri Pacific line. The plant has two units rated at a
total of 1,010 megawatts, burning 4.08 million tons of Powder
River
coal in 2004. This coal is hauled in a fleet of 745 Bethgons. |

units producing at total of 1,362 megawatts of power. La Cygne
is jointly owned with Kansas Gas & Electric and burned
6.05 million tons of Powder River Coal in 2004. To supply

Stock Checks:
Inventory is a fluid commodity. It changes by the
hour (sometimes by the minute). To retain our pricing structure
we maintain stock levels designed to turnover inventory 6 times each
year. We cannot guarantee stock status till we have an order
in hand. All product is subject to prior sale. If we confirm
that we have it, and, while we are waiting for the order
it sells, you would be upset that we did not hold it.
We used to hold items but learned a VERY EXPENSIVE lesson.
When we held items for customers’ orders, the order
never materialized 80%+ of the time. We lost out on
the orders placed while the item was on hold. Also
we wasted staff time that could have been used to pull actual
orders.
Since we are well known for finding older stock the fact
that it may not be on our shelves at this minute does not
mean we can’t get it. So, as we spell out on our terms
pages, we don’t do it anymore.
You may, however, call in and we will tell you if the items
are available and if possible attempt to locate what we
don’t have while you are on the phone. |
